I worked at Schlumberger full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, career growth, challenging work, never bored, stimulating environment, great benefits, flexible work hours for most positions, decent pay, safety minded. Has high ideals for work-life balance, safety, and employee satisfaction. Diverse workforce.

    Cons

Requires 110% commitment to SLB ideals, pays ok, but you will work more hours than 40 hour work week at times. Does not always meet their high ideals for work-life balance.

    Advice to Management

Hire enough people to meet the work demands.

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Money, work experience, travelling to new places, meeting people from all over the world. Pretty generous vacation allowance and good benefits, profit sharing, and health insurance.

    Cons

Difficult promotions, harsh working conditions, long hours, difficult to get a schedule, working months at a time, pay cuts, layoffs, job uncertainty, taking away benefits and vacation time, furloughs. The oilfield is not the place to be right now.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with your people. I have had some managers that were like used car salesmen who would sugar coat everything and make empty promises. You don't have to be brutally honest, just friendly. However if you're too nice, you will get run over by your own people and some will try to take advantage of you and do dis-honest things.

    - CRM & Business analytics need an upgrade
    - Very challenging position and requirement to wear many hats

    Advice to Management

    - Hold on to talent during downturns
    - Greater transparency to employees on business outlook and where the company is heading

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, people are great, get to have experiences that very few people will ever have, can be easy to advance

    Cons

This is just for D&M, as other divisions are more apt to have a schedule, but the work life balance is terrible. Working 2/3 of the the year away from everyone and everything and minimum 12 hour days with 24 hours days being acceptable, just uncommon. Several locations work more out of the year than this as the client restricts the amount of time we can work. When we're not working, we're not allowed to leave the area despite being told it would be fine when hired. Frustrating when other divisions within SLB and companies have an equal rotation 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off or 2 and 2.

    Advice to Management

At least try to meet the standard set by competitors

    Pros

The pay was great, and the rotation wasn't too bad. For a job right out of college, it was pretty good.

    Cons

There was no support system, and the company was not at all focused on the employee.

    Pros

Depending on the region, you can get ideal work schedules (2 weeks on, 2 weeks off). This free time to do whatever you want (travel, etc).

    Cons

Family life/Social life can take a hit when you are working in the field. Can be moved transfered between regions at the blink of an eye.

    Advice to Management

Give engineers more of a notice before transfer.
