  1. "Research Internship"

Former Intern - Anonymous Intern in Cambridge, East of England, England (UK)

I worked at Schlumberger as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked at Schlumberger Gould Research in Cambridge for a year. The research centre is full of very intelligent people which meant as an intern there was never a problem for which help was not readily available. I was given large amounts of responsibility as an intern which was not afforded to many of my peers at other companies.

    Cons

Work was often slow to get going however this is as much a factor of research in general as opposed to a specific problem with Schlumberger. There was also not much cross-department collaboration.

    Advice to Management

Do more to encourage cross-department collaboration. Each department seemed to be in competition with each other rather than working collaboratively towards a shared goal.

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good time off (if you're in the right job), good pay,

    Cons

Short notice if you need to go offshore, pay differences vary...even if you do the same job as others. Promotions can be given out to those who tick the boxes, rather than those deserving.

    Advice to Management

    Better work/life balance, equal pay

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very good training and site experience. All training centers are abroad so a few overseas trips are guaranteed if you are keen to progress. The progression system is very structured which appeals to some and not others. In general, all field personnel are great to work with and the teams are welcoming.

    Cons

Minimal time off and low salaries for offshore work. There is a high turnover of staff (1-3 years), mainly due to the poor work/life balance. Role is ideal for graduates to get offshore experience under their belt before they progress within the industry. Expect a high workload (3 weeks offshore is standard), night-shifts, and low time-off at home. Certainly not equal time in the current economic climate.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees less like equipment and more like trusted and valuable people. Hire enough staff to allow for decent recovery between jobs.

    Pros

a great environment where expats work in a team spirit in remote locations. a great place to start good friendships to keep for the rest of your lives. ability to make lots of cash in a short period of time. able to purchase very profitable slb stock shares at a discounted price.

    Cons

not being able to grow roots anywhere you work unless you are a home country employee. not every location work will be friendly etc...lots of travelling is not for everyone. adaptability to new circumstances is a requirement to survive.

I worked at Schlumberger full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely varied position supporting multiple business units - could have seen myself there until retirement because of this. Operations, generally, were great and very appreciative of support. Ultimately, it's a Company that knows how to survive therefore can have the reputation of being cut throat in the lean times - I suppose if I was a shareholder, I'd be glad of this strategy - some of the competition appear to be lagging when it comes to making the tough decisions. Not sure if this is a Pro or a Con given that I was one of the unfortunate many shown the door when the Oil price tumbled.

    Cons

In the support side of things, it was political with a fair bit of job justification going on...they love their meetings too...love them. Managers worked very hard when someone above them cracked the whip however things worked very slowly when a request came from below.

    Advice to Management

I'm guessing keep doing what you're doing - who am I to tell the world's largest Oil service company what to do? - as long as the shareholders are happy, that's all that matters.

    Pros

Good company paid well , working conditions and good pension .

    Cons

Been working in Belfast site as assembly and test technician for a few years now and still waiting for training in certain jobs , it is so badly run its hilarious . The management do everything they can to make your job as difficult as they can and laugh about it . Endless meetings about nothing , no tea breaks , have to wear safety hats indoors , could go on all night about how bad the management is .

    Advice to Management

Apply for a new job as a traffic warden , your hated just as much and as useful .

    Pros

good years when oil price and activity level are high

    Cons

no opportunities if you are in the industry at wrong time. especially for mid career hire.

    Advice to Management

need to pay attention to each individual's career development path. cannot just ignore or delay people's career development. people will just leave.

I have been working at Schlumberger full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

An extensive technical expertise is friendly shared and there is Eureka system for knowledge sharing among all employees.

Commitment regardless of domain. Easy communication across domains.

    Competitive bonuses and soft management.

A brave new world of innovations in oil&gas industry.

    Cons

Ambiguous procedure extrapolated from the field to the office or vice versa.

Visit of VPs disrupt workflows in the locations. Reporting and delegation corrupts the tasks across many levels of management, though it is typical for big structures.

Most of managers cannot supervise, and in hard times of the project they might try to flood the team with the pointless ways of validation and possible solutions.

Cost cuts all around, trainings and travels need to be strongly justified by business needs.

Growth through the M&A discourages long-term technical projects.

    Advice to Management

Seek for a person who match a task the best, or allocate more time and training for new comers.

Introduce distributed groups to avoid overheads with expensive personal relocations.

    Consider business diversification.
