    Pros

Geographically set up for success. The business model of the auto and metal recycling has lead to tremendous market share.

    Cons

Senior Leadership lacks operational expertise and modern leadership skills. Poor direction and poor morale has lead to poor results operationally. Upward mobility is stagnant and senior leadership is not qualified to make critical decisions.

    Advice to Management

Success is not guaranteed and should not be taken for granted. Listen to your employees who are crying for help!!! Break the chain of command and you will break the mold that is in place today.

    Pros

Schnitzer Steel is a public company

    Cons

How can anyone complain when working at Schnitzer? Take one minute to review comments about our business practices. As a Corporate employee, intelligence does not matter. Instead being friends with management is the only way to be promoted.

    Advice to Management

Management are great people - They don’t even acknowledge us on the elevator

I have been working at Schnitzer Steel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's barely worth even being here as a union employee...management tripping over each other searching for something to justify their job...

    Cons

Company hosed us on the last contract on production bonus, profit sharing and insurance....losing our trades people because the market is expanding and they are losing over 10K a year staying here...

    Advice to Management

Wake up!!! Nobody cares about production anymore, this $30 a week bonus isn't an incentive....

I worked at Schnitzer Steel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay and benefits, nice corporate location and office, paid holidays, a free candy bar for your birthday, and a liberal company policy allowing mentally unstable persons to be placed in managerial roles

    Cons

Long hours because employees who are left must try to pick up the slack
    Very High stress
Lots of turnover through layoffs and voluntary attrition
    Low morale
Lack of solid leadership cultivates an environment where backbiting, gossiping, and other toxic behaviors thrive
    Some extremely unprofessional managers
CEO lives on the East Coast making it much easier to let people go when you never meet them
CEO is a former investment banker. Having never done the real work in the industry, she's completely out of touch. One of the lowest approval ratings of any Fortune 1000 CEO and one of the lowest company ratings on Glassdoor.

    Advice to Management

Notice HR will probably add some comment about tough times in the industry...but check the ratings and comments on other metal/steel companies and you will see the difference

Not a collaborative or supportive environment what so ever, people are out to get eachother, passive aggressive and very little support from upper management.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and listen to their cries for help. Let loose the bully's who are chasing away your true talent!
