I worked at Schnitzer Steel full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive pay and benefits, nice corporate location and office, paid holidays, a free candy bar for your birthday, and a liberal company policy allowing mentally unstable persons to be placed in managerial roles

    Cons

Long hours because employees who are left must try to pick up the slack
    Very High stress
Lots of turnover through layoffs and voluntary attrition
    Low morale
Lack of solid leadership cultivates an environment where backbiting, gossiping, and other toxic behaviors thrive
    Some extremely unprofessional managers
CEO lives on the East Coast making it much easier to let people go when you never meet them
CEO is a former investment banker. Having never done the real work in the industry, she's completely out of touch. One of the lowest approval ratings of any Fortune 1000 CEO and one of the lowest company ratings on Glassdoor.

    Advice to Management

Notice HR will probably add some comment about tough times in the industry...but check the ratings and comments on other metal/steel companies and you will see the difference

I worked at Schnitzer Steel (Less than a year)

    Pros

There is a lot to learn, especially if you enjoy audits and problem solving.

    Cons

Not a collaborative or supportive environment what so ever, people are out to get eachother, passive aggressive and very little support from upper management.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and listen to their cries for help. Let loose the bully's who are chasing away your true talent!

Turnover is high, quarterly layoffs. management needs to talk to us more. Safety is first but not with new lady. She needs to come in the yard and see what's going on.

    Advice to Management

Get out get to know us workers in yard and say "thank you"

    Pros

Not much decent dental insurance and the workers in yard are hard working good people that make schnitzer profits not the overpaid fools running it into the ground

    Cons

Management r overpaid and have no idea what they r doing. No HR whatsoever only show up here and there to cause trouble. Equipment falling apart due to the inexperienced people they hire to operate, maybe they will realize when someone gets severely injured.

    Advice to Management

Walk away you are a bunch of thiefs

    Pros

Independence since the CEO is never around

    Cons

Job seekers-CEO is documented liar. Our billionaire CEO Tamara says she lives in Portland. Everyone including her boss John Carter understands that’s false so ask why. Human resources is in cahoots with Ms. Lundgren and HR is not your friend at this company, read reviews. The company loses money every year and Mrs. Lundgren still receives her annual $10 million dollars.

    Advice to Management

JOB APPLICANTS AND CURRENT EMPLOYEES: PLEASE ASK WHERE TAMARA LUNDGREN LIVES so the truth comes out.

Beautiful Downtown location that the Company cannot afford to be in.

    Cons

    Poor Leadership
    NO development
    Layoffs every other month
    Poor communication
Good people are walking out the door because they just cant take it anymore, often with no notice and without another job
HR male at Corporate office is useless and cannot be trusted
    Poor morale
    Negative attitudes
    Leaders are completely disconnected
I go DAYS without seeing or hearing from my boss
I cannot trust that my pay, benefits or 401K will be handled properly.

Does this sound like a place you would like to work? If you ignore this warning it will just be a matter of time until you see and feel the same things. It does not matter if you work out in the locations or at the corporate office. It is all the same.
    Run, don't look back!
I just wish someone would have given me the same warning!

    Advice to Management

Ask those of us that have been here through all of these layoffs and cuts, what it would take to improve morale and restore our dedication to the Company. It may just be too late but you need to ask AND commit to making the necessary changes.
