I worked at Scholastic Book Fairs full-time

    Pros

Great mission. Good teams. Good benefits. Summer break.

    Cons

High stress. They seem to take a machine gun approach to problems and it seems like they are always changing the rules of the game.

    Pros

Wonderful to work for a company that cares about reading

    Cons

Pay is low for the amount of work

    Advice to Management

Pay what employees are worth when you have them instead of making offers when they're ready to leave

    Pros

The company wants to be an industry leader and is implementing many positive changes.

    Cons

No upward mobility options or plan if you are in management. They always hire from the outside at the corporate level every time an opportunity opens up.

    Advice to Management

Too many excellent people internally, stop hiring from the outside!

I have been working at Scholastic Book Fairs part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive wage, production numbers are easy to attain, warehouse supervisors easily accommodate your work schedule availability, staff is there to provide assistance if needed, get paid for holidays if you are normally scheduled to work that day, receive huge discounts on Scholastic books and items, if you are a steady and reliable worker management will call you back to work next year.

    Cons

Warehouse is not air conditioned, most part time help is seasonal based on the opening of schools, little opportunity for advancement, no health insurance unless you are a full time or permanent part time position,

I worked at Scholastic Book Fairs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Scholastic has a great staff and culture, plenty of time off and just a great overall product (who doesn't love book fairs).

    Cons

It can be hectic during the busy fair times, management will come by and feed you snacks, bring food trucks or whatever else they need you to do to help you become stress free.

    Advice to Management

    Don't ever get too corporate.

I have been working at Scholastic Book Fairs part-time

    Pros

    Flexible schedule
    Family Friendly
    School Schedule (off in summer)

    Cons

hours are minimal during slow periods

    Advice to Management

Ask warehouse employees before implementing changes that will affect how we do our jobs. A couple of changes made this season have been a hindrance rather than beneficial. (change in box sizes and the tool used to pull boxes from the back of shelf)

  10. "High turnover due to poor communication and inconsistent hours with no prospects for growth or development"

I have been working at Scholastic Book Fairs part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great product, feel good about promoting literacy. Work in many different areas with many different people. Compensated for travel time and mileage.

    Cons

Last minute scheduling, lack of hours during slow times in the seasons. Poor communication between account reps and field reps. Often the school is given incorrect appointment times, giving an unreliable and bad first impression of the person who is scheduled for said appointment.

    Advice to Management

Focus on retaining quality employees instead hiring many people and giving few assignments to each. Communication needs to be improved across all departments so that everyone can be on the same page.
