I have been working at School Board of Alachua County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Community values education . Nice blend of experienced and new teachers. Many of the students are superb. Some parents put in a lot of their own time as volunteers, and this is encouraged.

    Cons

Management is more responsive to press and parent comments than to teachers. Squeaky wheels seem to have lots of power. (We have a new superintendent. This reflects how it has been to this point)Too top-down, too quick to adopt and mandate the newest trend or buzzwords. No avenue to comment about supervisors individually.

    Advice to Management

While educating all students is our goal, regular students are lost in the shuffle. We have huge efforts going out for the lowest quartile, special ed students and outliers. Less is done about helping teachers maintain a safe and productive learning environment for the majority of students.

I worked at School Board of Alachua County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Students are the only upside.

    Cons

First year teachers endure a large burden of extra trainings. None of which are efficiently managed...
Classrooms are kept in poor states - facilities updates are sorely needed.
Too much emphasis on building a culture of support without consistent/receptive administration. This is the result of overburdened Administrators and Counselors.

    Class sizes are LARGE.
I worked in a high-needs school where special-needs students were mainstreamed into regular classes that they could not handle. This resulted in the students who should be there getting a low-quality education.

    Advice to Management

    Stop mainstreaming students!
Follow through on offers of assistance!
    Be more solutions-oriented, less complacent!
Stop hiring people out of field just to fill a hiring quota.

I worked at School Board of Alachua County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The other teachers who worked there. The students were interested and appreciative of teachers who tried to teach, not just babysit. Hardworking staff members also.

    Cons

Salary was much lower than neighboring counties. Administration seemed to not care about teachers and staff members of schools.

    Advice to Management

Don't talk down to the people who work for you. Remember that teachers and administrators in schools are the ones who are on the front lines with the students and parents. Support them. Give them the tools they need to do a great job. Take care of them, and they'll take care of the students.

I worked at School Board of Alachua County full-time

    Pros

Working with students and the people who like to work with students can be a great experience.

    Cons

Relationship between teacher's union and district office is not positive. Teachers don't have to do lesson plans or professional development. There is culture of people resigning under pressure or leaving due to a "get you" environment. This is not healthy.

    Pros

Never boring, alot of really great hard working people to work with across multi departments and positions.

    Cons

Salary is not based on performance. Collective bargaining determines the amount across the board, in most cases.
