I worked at School Board of Alachua County part-time

    Pros

I was only an activity leader and they provided us with tons of training monthly in order to better serve the kids

The hours are set, so if you are a student it is hard to work your class schedule around it

    Pros

-reasonable pay for the state of Florida
-decent support system for starting teachers
-plentiful opportunities for advancement, especially with more advanced degrees

    Cons

-advice to principals and school officials is often ignored
-top leader (the superintendent) often makes promises that he cannot keep

    Advice to Management

Listen to your teachers more, especially those who have worked for a number of years. A number of management members have been out of the classroom for too long and they would do well to listen to those who are still teaching.

I worked at School Board of Alachua County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some good benefits like health insurance, retirement and paid holidays.

Lots of benefits such as discounts within the community.

    Casual dress. Jeans on Friday.

There are job opportunities that are only available to internal candidates

The hours are nice (typically 7:30-3:30). Some positions differ in work hours.

    Cons

    Gossip
    Favoritism
    Low Pay
Lack of respect from upper management
Staff members that no longer like their job, are burned out and want everyone to know it. They make everyone pay for it.
Administration DOES NOT have your back!

There were many times where I felt I under-appreciated by both fellow staff members and management. Many people never say so much as "hello" or bother to introduce themselves when you are new. Don't expect kindness or professionalism. Now, that does not go for everyone, but it goes for a large percentage. If you ever go to put in your 2 weeks notice, be prepared for that personal information to be broadcast everywhere. Prepare for nothing to be confidential.....It will get out.

Be prepared for your job to change from year to year. What you apply for is most likely NOT what you will end up doing. I found that out very quickly.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time demanding that faculty and staff respect each other. Also, be an example of that respect by modeling that behavior. You can throw all the "staff appreciation lunches" you want but until you start showing actual respect for EVERYONE, not just to your favorites, you will not see an improvement with staff members' job satisfaction and attitudes at work.

I worked at School Board of Alachua County full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mentor Coaches for new teachers are really helpful. Mrs. Logan is fantastic.
Co workers can be really friendly.

    Cons

Not a lot of support at the school I worked for.
Lots of needless data that we were forced to fill in that wasn't being used.
    Unhelpful and lazy support staff.

    Advice to Management

If the reading coaches and support staff aren't doing anything, it's time to consider hiring a new leadership team.
