I have been working at School District of Philadelphia full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I enjoy working with some of the most needy students in the United States. The City is cornucopia of materials that can integrated into almost any lessons.

    Cons

The SCR is making it difficult for teachers to teach. They routinely circumvent our ability to do our jobs effectively.

    Advice to Management

Give the teachers a fair and equitable contract. Stop wasting money of programs that you think will work and instead, invest that money on your teachers and schools.

    Pros

Diverse student body from across city; dedicated teachers and administration, depending on school; pension

    Cons

Low salaries compared to surrounding suburbs, despite requiring Masters degree or higher; lack of trickle down for basic supplies, books, photocopies, current technology; some administrators lack basic management skills forcing teachers to work independently versus collaboratively

    Advice to Management

Keep fighting to survive; despite declining numbers of students, scores and college ready students still decling; support your teachers and students unconditionally

I have been working at School District of Philadelphia full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Starting Salary was a pleasant $46,000 a year. Application and Interviews were a piece of cake. Fellow teachers are incredible and inspiring.

    Cons

It's urban education so if your heart isn't in it, it isn't for you. The biggest con is that you end up spending A LOT of your own money for classroom supplies...nothing new if you have ever taught in a poverty stricken area.

    Advice to Management

    More Teacher Support
