    I worked at Schurz Communications

    Pros

Really great place to work. Staff is very knowledgable and the digital department is ahead of everyone else in the broadcast industry.

    Cons

The fact that they sold all of their TV stations.

I worked at Schurz Communications full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits, can't enter at least 5 sincere pros here!

    Cons

Pay for non-managers is below industry standard. Company is old-fashioned in a bad way (hierarchical, sexist, stuck in its ways). Employees are considered peons to be milked by management with close to zero appreciation for their contributions. Worst company I've worked for as an adult.

    Advice to Management

Might be nice to occasionally learn from your mistakes. Lost $380k due to stupidity, but your solution is to require employees to go through yet more comically bad online training that everyone mocks? Hmmm.

I worked at Schurz Communications full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits were ok. Vacation time was ok.

    Cons

Everything about this company was ran asss-backwards, from the very top, to the very bottom. Utter lack of empathy for employees, with numerous, layoffs done very disrespectfully and with zero tact.

    Advice to Management

Family run businesses often don't have empathy for employees because they've never had to worry about how they're going to make ends meet, themselves. And, the people under them can't tell them different because they'll be banished from the club. Owner is spineless and doesn't face people who is are being let go. He has his monkeys do it for him.

I worked at Schurz Communications full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Coworkers are generally supportive of each other. Food is frequently brought in

    Cons

Lack of leadership. Executive editor created division within the staff. Management didn't like certain businesses within the community and would go out of their way to find negative things to write about these places. Work hours were WAY too long and the staff was cut numerous times.

    Advice to Management

Have realistic expectations of people. Don't let your personal life or feels on a topic dictate how you do your job or how you cover a topic.

I have been working at Schurz Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good experience in the print/publishing market. Benefits are decent. People are easy to get along with. Everyone takes pride in what they produce.

    Cons

Downsizing of offices puts more work and more responsibilities on employees. Being personally effected by those decisions, it’s unreasonable to meet deadlines without overtime work. The print and publishing business has an uncertain future.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees more. They need to be compensated fairly for the work they do. A lot of them aren’t paid enough for the work they do to keep the company afloat.
