Great benefits but lack of growth opportunities and often a toxic and sexist culture

      Pros

The benefits of SEL are great with a free on campus health clinic for you and your family along with a workout facility. The employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) is also a great deal if you stay with the company for years.

      Cons

Management at SEL had a tendency to treat male employees differently than female employees and push women who were hired for their technical and design abilities into project management, purchasing, and training roles. When new employees arrive, management would force women to be the trainers. Repetitive work was forced upon certain employees while management showed favoritism and provided career growth opportunities to other employees. There was a lack of challenge or any creativity in the work being performed. Fellow employees would treat female employees as purchasers for their projects and often make sexist and inappropriate remarks such as 1. "Women are just worse at math and science than men" 2. "White women can't cook these days" 3. "All women lie about sexual assault and rape for fame and attention." 4. "Women deserve to get paid less" 5. "Do you think it is more dangerous for women or men to get raped?" Management had a tendency to not only micromanage, but also to ignore any complaints about sexist behavior or a lack of growth opportunities.

good company, but not all good

Mar 2, 2021 - Lead Power Engineer in Pullman, WA

      Pros

      - Outstanding mission, and commitment to quality, technical accuracy and being the best. - Starting pay is actually not that competitive, but performance is recognized. - Successful company with a niche unlikely to be displaced, as in they aren't going anywhere, probably ever. - Great ESOP retirement plan.

      Cons

      - Atrocious ego and image problem. This company literally tells itself weekly, at the weekly all-hands business meeting, that they are the one and only experts in their field. - Terrible work-life balance. Very limited leave/PTO time, even after years of working here. Add this to the remote location and it's a punishing combination. - Everyone is expected to work 10 hour days, 6 days a week, with no compensation beyond a standard 40-hour salary (that's an exaggeration but you get the idea). And that comes down from the top. - Depending on the area in the company, taking leave or trying to use flexible work hours might make you feel guilty via social pressure.
