I worked at SciMetrika full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Autonomy, flexibility, opportunity to take on new job responsibilities, tuition assistance, gift cards for good performance, CEO has open door policy

    Cons

Poor communication from the top down. No verbal acknowledgement of the financial status of the company or accountability taken for bad business decisions and egregious mistakes made by management that lead to a loss of project work and employee morale. Instead, the company's obviously fragile financial position is chalked up to be merely a side effect of government cutbacks and just simply "the nature of the business". This place can barely keep its lights on and this is all just par for the course? Sounds like denial coupled with desperate attempts at image preservation.

    Advice to Management

Time to forget about image and start being honest about mistakes made on every level or you'll be here again next year -- same time, same place. Elevate and empower your loyal hardworking employees, and promote from within. Try to remember what it was that made SciMetrika a really great place to work at one time, and get back to that. Best of luck.

I worked at SciMetrika full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible with schedules/work from home, tuition assistance, free snacks, big offices. Some great people who were a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

The company never really seemed to find its footing, and as a result it was just entirely too unstable to feel comfortable for any reasonable length of time. While I can appreciate the need to focus on pursuing new opportunities in order to grow as a company, this consistently occurred to the detriment of our performance on current projects and our ability to build relationships with new and existing clients. This company notorious for (shockingly) bad hires, and promoting and retaining (ad nauseam) ill-equipped leaders that delegate(d) most of their work but always manage(d) to show up when it is time to take the credit for it. It has been suggested that negative reviews are from disgruntled employees. While I don't doubt there may be some unwarranted attacks, it is a bit of a coincidence that many of the problems mentioned in more recent reviews are one's highlighted in reviews from years ago. If the company continues to dismiss negative reviews as simply the unmerited outpouring of disgruntled employees, then the appropriate concessions to correct mistakes will never be made. Furthermore, even if many of the negative reviews WERE from disgruntled employees, wouldn't that still be a rather important indicator of employee satisfaction? The last major con is that in the last couple of years especially, very few employees have really understood how to appropriately execute research from a scientific standpoint. While it is true of any government contractor to have to make methodological sacrifices to please the client, it is still no excuse to sacrifice ethics and integrity. For those who are passionate about science, the project work can be very frustrating and unfulfilling. It's not really the company's fault for not fulfilling my particular career aspirations, but it is the company's fault for portraying themselves as passionate scientific innovators yet falling very short on the science part.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to understand the perspectives of employees on all levels, and not just those that you appoint as leaders. Get to know your what skills your employees possess so that you can staff projects and proposals more appropriately. Look closer into what your managers do with their time on a daily basis. Invest more time in making sure you're making the right decisions if they are decisions that affect people's jobs. Be careful of taking the word of people who have their own agenda's or you will continue to lose loyal and strong employees that actually do the work.

I have been working at SciMetrika full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, free snacks, great benefits, great salary, fun wellness and social activities, flexibility and ability to work remotely, lots of growth opportunities, career development is encouraged, paid for and supported, easy commute from anywhere in triangle. Employees care about each other it really has a family feel to it. For a small company the benefits and pay are really great.

    Cons

Government contracting isn't what it use to be so the company has reduced in size but this is no fault of SciMetrika. It has been smart and made tough decisions to right size.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good fight, ignore any negative reviews from former employees who were let go or disgruntle. Most people who write negative reviews should have "moved on" years ago if they were that unhappy - life is too short! Jean we appreciate your open door policy and candor.

I have been working at SciMetrika full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

CEO is aware of restructuring needs, family friendly, diligent senior leadership team, ability to recognize financial and staffing deficiencies and correct them, long term goals and motivation for success, down to earth people to work with, convenient RTP location.

    Cons

Company has suffered a revenue downturn in the last year due to government cutbacks.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work! It is a pleasure working at Scimetrika. Some employees don't understand the nature of the 8a business and SBA parameters. The fruits of the hard work by the current employee base will pay off in 2018.

I worked at SciMetrika full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There used to be a lot of advatanges to working with SciMetrika...comraderie, interesting projects and supportive management. However, somewhere along the way, this company lots right of what was important. Now, they have no senior level technical staff and will not be around through the summer.

    Cons

So many cons for this company....people leading projects that have no technical knowledge of the subject, staff being taken advantage of, there is absolutely no communication between management and staff. The CEO has not once addressed the financial situation of the company with the staff...just lots of being siloed and not given the ability to perform your job. It is sad and any public health job would be better than what this company can currently provide. This is coming from someone who worked up the chain quickly. Do not bother...this company is a lost cause.

    Advice to Management

Fire everyone and start over. Jean, you are not a brilliant business man and need to surround yourself with visionary people. If you do not, you will regret it soon. This company cannot continue to function as it is now.

I worked at SciMetrika full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefit package was very competitive. Funding available for professional development and professional development was encouraged.

    Cons

Weak leadership from the top to the bottom. Compensation was not always equitable; there were concerns with multiple forms of bias. Promotions are not typically based on merit or performance- more dependent on favoritism and desperation. 20% of the staff does 80% of the work. Poor performing employees are not addressed well. High turnover, poor plan for long-term sustainability. Do your homework on the company's current portfolio and projections before accepting an offer.

    Advice to Management

Support your high-performing managers and junior staff better so you can retain quality staff. Stop retaining long-term employees with chronic performance issues and little work ethic.

I have been working at SciMetrika part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This company is a great place to work. They offer a lot of flexibility, trusting the employees to get the job done. There is a lot of respect coming from management to the people under them. It is more of a team environment than a manager/underling concept. Their culture is one of integrity and excellence. There are a lot of opportunities to participate and enjoy extracurricular activities during office hours. Everyone works hard and it is appreciated in that they are not only compensated salary-wise. There is almost always some small contests going on, where we win Visa cards etc. I am looking at other opportunities because I am part time here and I need full time hours.

    Cons

I honestly cannot think of any downside. Mt experience has only been positive.

    Advice to Management

Continue to support those that work under you.
