I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good fast paced busy work. Always doing something. Time seemed to fly. Safe and most the time well ran. Absolutely absolutely love Malcolm and Chase.

    Cons

The point system... to many bosses. Everyone of them bosses wanted it done the way they would do it but not one of them would be willing to actually do the job u were doing.

    Advice to Management

U need to look at the big picture of your mules. Some of them bled scotts Miracle-Gro and took pride in there work. And u could care less. I hope no scotts employee mule r management gets the taste that i got handed to me.

I have been working at Scotts Miracle-Gro part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Extremely flexible, tons of autonomy, chance to network with big box hardware stores. Simple work. Opens the door for other retail merchandiser jobs. Company phone, tool bag, clothing. This is overall a fun job that is perfect for those seeking side employment or dip their toe in merchandising or retail.

    Cons

Some heavy lifting, dealing with barely functioning Department Managers. Season work with let's face it no room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

From a business perspective they spend incredibly too much money on unnecessary training and correspondence with merchandisers. I have completed dozens of online training courses, attended in person training seminars, received pamphlets on SMG benefits which I am not eligible for. Unless they expect folks to return year after year, which is a little sad, there is little need for such extensive and exorbitant procedures.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Manual labor, but not overly hard. Time goes by quick as you are constantly busy with tasks. Team oriented environment to handle the pool of stores you are responsible for.

    Cons

The work is seasonal so the job security kind of lacks. Had a 401k and without warning it started charging inactivity fees so the balance went to zero.

    Pros

    Independence
    Freedom to manage territory
    Great company
    Great people
    Team environment is excellent
    Company vehicle

    Cons

To be successful in this role means obscene hours
Lack of coordination at corporate level with clients creates in-store issues that are avoidable

    Advice to Management

Worry less about minor details that change by the minute and more about actual sales.

Put a Scotts brand logo on the vehicles so that they become worthwhile to the SMs.

I worked at Scotts Miracle-Gro full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits - SMG treats employees right in terms of events, time off, 401K match.

    Cons

Some departments are extremely stressful and cut throat. Forced rankings put great people still at the bottom, especially if you are in a high performing area.
There is so much turnover in some departments, there is complete direction change every year.
Moves managers around too quickly and without experience.

    Advice to Management

Recognize people are your greatest asset. SMG is too quick to throw away talented people.

    Pros

Depending on the position you have at SMG, you are given freedom to run your portion of the business as you wish as long as it's within the goals and vision of the company. It's very fast paced, always doing something different. SMG welcomes your new ideas and initiatives to execute those ideas.

    Cons

Peak season can be brutal with nonstop work for several months. Communication is a challenge especially when it comes to the direction of the company as we find out info from Forbes and other sources outside of SMG. Advancement opportunities typically require relocation.

    Advice to Management

Local management is great. Employees shouldn't hear about important news, good or bad, through sources outside of the company we work for.
