    Pros

Job security, good pension, staff discount, the people you work wuth

    Cons

It does depend on what store you work in Branch managers and area managers differ massively. Unfair rotas, lack of staff, expected targets high, high staff turn over, lack of care from higher management, used to be a really nice place to work however over the last 18 months its just a money making machine at any cost staff are now just a number kingfisher are strangling the life out of it.

Mental health issues not taking seriously Quickly hung out to dry Squeezing of pay roll Culture used as an excuse for anyrhing and everything. Area managers basically generic email senders, no support all from the old boys network.

I have been working at Screwfix part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent customer base, you can have a lot of friendly banter with your regular customers. Pay is decent, and the discounts at Screwfix and B&Q are nice. There's also some decent incentives to help push sales in the stores. Can work with some great people from all walks of life.

    Cons

Depending on the type of manager you get, you can be for a good time at work, or a horrible time. You can be in for harassment and unwelcome comments about your appearance and weight. We're constantly told by the manager that they would like to replace us all with old, semi-retired people so they can give out 4 hour shifts so they don't have to give people breaks. Management spend most the day on their personal phones taking personal phone calls. Some area managers are useless, so there will be no point going to them to raise a complaint about horrible managers. Getting recorded conversations for the most pettiest things ever. Being expected to do three things at once, we can't do it! SOTY is the biggest waste of time ever. As long as the stock is in the right location and the stock count is right, that's all that should matter. Terrible IT equipment. Have to wait ages to get anything repaired or replaced is a real inconvenience. Rotas get changed quite frequently, meaning people are unable to plan their lives, i.e. making appointments, and actually having a life.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review but I'm sorry to hear about your experiences. I can see you're a current employee but it doesn't state which Trade Counter, however I want you to know that the cons you have listed, especially regarding management, are taken seriously, not tolerated and not what we endorse as a wider business. If you feel comfortable to do so, please contact us on reviews@screwfix.com with further information so we can look into this. Your comments will absolutely be passed on to the relevant teams but please do get in touch if you want to discuss in more depth or provide anymore feedback.

    Pros

    Discount, growing company investment

    Cons

You only seem to get in Managers rolls certainly in the Scottish stores if your a friend or family member of the senior managers i.e. Area Managers good talent gets overlooked and when they take on someone from outside the business they don’t seem to stay , also it seems if you don’t get on with a certain store manager that’s weak they move the under dog instead of dealing with the root problem

Micro area managers, unrealistic work expectations, break the law with working regulations, change contracts with no negotiation, just do it and shut up!

I have been working at Screwfix full-time

    Pros

Generous holiday time. You get 28 days and an additional day every year you work for the company up to 5 years. Unless you are a branch manager then they give you the 33 as soon as you start... HR look after you if you have problems Screwfix grows year on year so your job always feels safe They are constantly looking to update their systems and improve on how things work

    Cons

No commission even for the guys who work in trade. You want sales people but you're not going to pay them as sales people? No bonuses for anyone except assistant manager and manager Managers get changed constantly No holiday time in September and some area managers also don't let you have any in November You're better off coming into the company as an ASM externally. If you get promoted within you don't get paid as much as if they just employ someone new. They make excuses like "we can only up your pay so much" so you're going to pay someone who doesn't know anything more than me that's been with you for X amount of years? 👍

I have been working at Screwfix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of chances for progression and with the recent introduction of the Branch Manager apprenticeship scheme the opportunities are there Great staff discount The staff are great The training is excellent, the Product Confidence and How To especially Free uniform and safety boots The area manager Steph for Area 27 is very good and cares about her staff

    Cons

Low available hours in the store means you are often short staff and then your Area Managers wonder why you have missed targets or not gotten any rebrands. More full time staff needed in all stores rather than all part timers Branch managers not leading by example, for example being late or one rule for the store manager and one for other staff and management. More support from Branch Managers, less micromanaging Sunday Hours on Bank Holidays would be ideal rather than 0700-2000 Can be hard to have a social life with the early or late shift option

I worked at Screwfix full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Opening early in the mornings until 8pm a night meant you could either leave work at 3pm after a shift allowing you to get other messages seen to, or start at 12 for an evening shift.

    Cons

If you want to succeed in this company you must sell your soul. When you arrive into the company you will sign 50+ risk assesments clearing the company of any responsibility if you ever have an accident in work or otherwise. They have a strict management system and outlined steps on how to get rid of staff they feel do not perform well. Area managers will encourage the removal of staff they are not 100% happy with. If you want to become a manager you must progress to supervisor, then a bottle neck appears as each store has a minimum of 3 supervisors who all want assistant managers jobs. This factors means you may be forced to work in a store 1hour from your home to show your willing to work anywhere for the business with no gauranteed progression, just the hope you will be picked for the next slot. These management slots dont come up often as management positions include bonuses and perks. You will work multiple hours of overtime and never receive payment for. Also be prepared to hear the words, 'the needs of the business come first'

I have been working at Screwfix full-time

    Pros

Ok pay and you could find stores local to where you live but not necessarily you'll get to work there.

    Cons

Things starting to fall apart with new DoFs and new board of directors. No one has a clue about Area managers and they keep on changing like a revolving door. Store managers are not looked after. It's time to find a new job as Screwfix is what it used to be.
