I have been working at Scripps Institute of Oceanography UC San Diego (More than a year)

    Pros

views, weekly happy hour on the beach, laid back atmosphere, supportive and collaborative faculty and students

    Cons

There is a lack of food and coffee options on Scripps campus. The neighborhood is expensive, and nearby neighborhoods that are somewhat more affordable (e.g., UTC) aren't very exciting.

  2. "Great people, casual environment"

I worked at Scripps Institute of Oceanography UC San Diego part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Meaningful work with intelligent, motivated and helpful people. Amazing location right on the beach. Many interesting events, conferences and seminars on the campus daily. Active community involvement and discounts to the Birch Aquarium for Scripps affiliation.

    Cons

Student and employment positions are competitive. Parking is limited to street parking, car break-ins occur occasionally. Low/fixed pay in entry level or student positions. Overall experience can vary greatly depending on supervisor/PI or department.

I worked at Scripps Institute of Oceanography UC San Diego part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Scheduling was very flexible, as a student worker.
Access to interesting and world renowned faculty
Great lab experience and the views of the Pacific Ocean can't be beat.

    Cons

Parking is never free unless you work early in the morning or in the evening and thus get access to the limited street parking.

As a student worker, no real downside with SIO.

    Advice to Management

Offer more training to student workers who have an interest in continuing on with SIO after finishing school. I was fortunate in my experience with Scripps so I don't have much to critique them with. Please continue fostering community engagement I enjoyed meeting people from other labs at events and social gatherings.
