    Positive Outlook

I worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

From what I observed, Scripps has a collaborative, winning culture. Really talented faculty, postdocs, and grad students. Young people are supported. I didn't see or hear about much of the toxic stuff that you hear about at some other universities. Being on the beach in one of the nicest cities in America doesn't hurt.

    Cons

Pay for postdocs and project scientists is poor, but this is not unique to Scripps, it is a general problem in academia.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography full-time

    Pros

Health benefits are better than average

    Cons

Extremely underpaid - Remember, this is California we are talking about. Cost of living is through the roof. You are extremely underpaid here and the high pressure environment does not help! No sense of direction - There is 50 things going on at once and you are needed at all times. Once again... you are not paid enough for the hectic work environment you have to deal with. Fakeness - Once again this is California we are talking about. Fakeness is in the bloodstream of the people here. You cannot trust many people here.
