I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (Less than a year)

I have been working at Seagate Technology as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive wage as far as internships are concerned, and the job is challenging and rewarding. The company is very flexible with the hours that you work, as long as you hit the 40 hour mark.

    Cons

The learning curve can be quite steep (depending on what area you're working in).

I have been working at Seagate Technology as an intern

    Pros

The people are very nice and make the day go by smoothly. Management treats employees well. As an intern, I feel welcome and appreciated.

    Cons

There aren't very many downsides to working here. There isn't a ton of structure,so if you're a person who wants structure, this may not be the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Continue making your employees feel welcome and appreciated.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Not many left, which is why most people who can find another job leave.

    Cons

Sometimes no raises or less than a couple percent. Very few benefits left, no good health insurance any more. Employees not treated well, just a number to be cut.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, decent work-life balance. Pay is very competitive. HDD's are a very mature technology but that also means each improvement requires very challenging engineering problems to be solved. Not a military/government/medical product so there are not regulation hurdles that prevent some the newest and most exotic tech.

    Cons

Company spends a lot of time convincing employees of a stable business which in itself is troubling; especially given the amount of recent layoffs and site closures.
No clear long term path to address markets outside of spinning disk. There are some 'big company' business process headaches.

    Advice to Management

Find a long term plan to address (the eventual) decline of spinning disk markets.

    Pros

Shakopee site has a very collaborative environment. Many nice people to work with. Very diversified. Everyone works to push the products out of the door.

    Cons

Industry is going down. No new products. Minnesota nice couldn't compete with Colorado cowboys/cowgirls. :).

    Pros

Flexible schedule, clear goals, interesting technology

    Cons

Lack of communication between 1st shift and offshift, limited advancement opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Encourage more development of lower level engineers

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working at Seagate was fine. Most people were competent and responsible. I was given the autonomy to do my job as I saw fit, and I was able to solicit help from other teams.

    Cons

Unfortunately, upper management has not handled SSD well, or come up with other streams of revenue besides spinning disks. Instead of innovating new revenue streams in data storage, Seagate just cuts the workforce every time revenues decline. Seagate continues to shrink the size of the company, with 3 layoffs in the last year and one imminent. Furthermore, the Shakopee site is now managed by Longmont CO, it seems clear they are second favorite and slowly being absorbed by Colorado. It may be just a matter of time before the Shakopee facility no longer exists.
