I worked at Seagate Technology as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

I was surrounded by kind and supportive people that tried their best to help me with the issues I was having. I would have been happy working there if I wasn't looking for a stimulating learning experience.

    Cons

The position itself offered very little in terms of challenge or mental stimulation. Even though it was labeled as engineering, the job was almost entirely busywork with little to no thought required to perform the duties required of me.

Even though I was only co-op (intern), I expect engineering positions to at least occasionally challenge me and teach me new skills. This job had absolutely nothing resembling a challenge or learning experience.

    Pros

The coworkers are really what makes the place good to work at. There are a lot of young talent and maybe because of the historical layoffs, the amount of incompetence in the North America site feel relatively minimal. The company has a lot of experience in the storage industry and it shows in how well organized the process is and it is a very collaborative environment.

    Cons

Like with many larger companies, it often feels like there is no individual recognition. A lot of talented people are not being compensated and rewarded properly and often times, things can feel unfair when less capable people or new hires are brought in with greater compensation. Another aspect of being a large company with a lot of history is that change happens very slowly.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your primary talent and give them more incentives to stay. While there needs to be some balancing act with the limited resources available, employee morale can certainly suffer when unjustified promotions and bonuses gets awarded while others more qualified are left hanging in the wind.

I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people, great atmosphere (offices, labs, even has its own cafe), excellent equipment (newest computers, labs well provided), and flexible work schedules.

    Cons

Unfortunately, Seagate (like all other businesses) struggling with economy, so promotions and advancement potentials are a little "slow", and again (for the same reasons), may have to live with fairly constant threats of cyclic layoffs. Not that I believe Seagate enjoys EITHER, its just a sad side effect "of our economy", but if I had to pick "cons", that is about as bad as it gets, and it isn't directly Seagate's fault?

    Advice to Management

In the face of a weak economy, sometimes verbal appraise is better pay, than "thanks for all your hard work, but no focal pay raises again this year". So step up the impromptu visits, and compliment "them" frequently.
