    Pros

In my department we have a good work environment with a hands off management style that encourages you to creatively solve problems. Management and the interview teams are very careful about not only picking qualified engineers, but personalities that fit the team and the role needed. The hours our flexible, and usually are in the 40-52 hr/wk range. There are of course the crunch times which will occasionally blow by that, but it's not too often. Management has been real good about just telling you to "go home" after the crunch has passed.

    Cons

It's a very large company, and comes with the typical large company rigmarole.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the number of mandatory all hands meetings. One meeting from the Executives or VPs, and one department meeting should do it. The rest are repetitious, without adding anything new or interesting.

    Pros

Challenging work, great benefits, excellent work-life balance. Managers are extremely nice, they care for their employees. The stock options are great and the bonus is descent.

    Cons

There was nothing wrong that I came across.

    Advice to Management

    Get rid of "non-contributing" managers!

  3. "Seagate is hard to beat in the OKC area."

    Pros

Seagate offers excellent pay and benefits for the OKC area. The holiday and vacation plans are generous, and you accrue vacation quickly. The technology and work environment are always up to date.

    Cons

The company likes to run a little too lean, so there's always fear of downsizing. Wall Street may never change their view of us no matter how well we do. The far west metro location is a long commute from many areas.

    Advice to Management

Hire more of the contractors that are reaching the end of their time allowance. Not doing so puts added stress on your career staff.

    Pros

Good corporate culture for such a large company. Everyone seemed to work together very well together, and the Shrewsbury office seemed like a small family. The knowledge base of the Shrewsbury office is extraordinary. The wealth of knowledge from the people that have worked there since the Digital days is extremely beneficial.

    Cons

The major downside, for myself, a college student, is the high average age of the company. There are hardly any employees under 30, and the knowledge from experience in the industry is lacking for anyone starting out. Besides this there are not too many downsides to the corporate culture of Seagate.

    Advice to Management

Advice to give to the Senior Management is to continue promoting youthfulness inside the company. Begin to hire recent college graduates in order to transfer the knowledge base to a new generation of workers.

    Pros

Benefits are very good and supportive of workers with young families-including flex time, vacation time, etc. The allows you to focus on doing a great job for the company while being there for your family too. Good reward system in place for successfully meeting your goals.

    Cons

Company is so big that higher level management does not always get, or if the get it does not properly weight, the information they need for making critical decisions.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your mid and lower level managers.

    Pros

    State-of-the art facilities
    Central location in Pittsburgh
    Beautiful building
Great resources for research and development

    Cons

Long-term company prospects are unclear given competition in hard drive industry, and with flash technology
Pittsburgh facility was closed during the 2009-2010 recession

    Advice to Management

Seagate ought to pursue its former interns more aggressively for full-time jobs. I performed extremely well as an intern, but had to work quite hard to get an interview for a full-time position. It seems silly to invest the expense and effort in evaluating and employing interns, and then to fail to follow up in a more organized fashion.

    Pros

I enjoyed working at Seagate. They were very good at recognizing outstanding effort. Excellent communication between groups and most employees are very willing to share knowledge.

    Cons

Way too many layoffs. The disk drive industry in cyclical. On average, the cycle seems to me about every four years.

    Advice to Management

    Reduce senior level management positions.

    Pros

Supportive upper management and competitive compensation are very evident here, which makes for a solid and strong environment. People are very willing to help one another out.

    Cons

Seagate (like many other companies though), has a lot of politics that go on internally, and a lot of competition among entry-level individuals in advancing within.
