I worked at Seagate Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Seagate is big on training and employee growth. If you are ambitious, you can get lots of good experience. They are very community oriented, people cook for a local shelter, employees work with schools, lots of that kind of thing.

    Cons

Lately, raises have been slight and promotions hard to get. The company has become very top heavy and it is hard to break out. It’s easy to get more responsibility, hard to get more pay. The company seems to be shrinking rather than growing. This hurts moral.

    Advice to Management

The disc drive industry is going through some huge changes. Flash is capturing many of their traditional markets. Macroeconomic forces are pushing on them and the field is down to 3 competitors. Management needs to figure out how to keep profits up and employees motivated in a shrinking market. I wish I knew that magic bullet.

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time

    Pros

Lots of super smart people trying to do the right thing.
Good technology and product development process.
Good benefits with emphasis on health and wellness.

    Cons

Lots of bureaucracy, inefficient systems, and reliance on manual processes.
Upper management seems pretty disconnected from the workforce.
    Bullying behavior is tolerated.

    Advice to Management

The Seagate Way had a lot of potential but has been ignored and undermined. The primary message during a year of restructuring seems to be a hard sell from the executives about why STX is still a leader in technology, but they seek very little open feedback from the employees. Employee surveys could be summarized with one superficial question -- "Do you believe us yet?" Try some real engagement instead of just "rah rah ree...be part of the team."

I have been working at Seagate Technology full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with. In team working relationships are great. Cross functional relationships are a bit more difficult.

    Cons

Very silo'ed company with cross functional team having difficulties. Management under values IT greatly even though the entire company runs on IT. Lack of good applications integrations between corporate systems. Constant threat of Layoffs. Very little opportunity for career advancement.
