I have been working at Sears as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Been at Sears Holdings as a contractor for just about 6 months and find the environment very family and career friendly. Overall the company seems open to taking risks and figuring out what works and what needs to change.

    Cons

There is much uncertainty about the financial stability of the company and its longevity. Also, because the company is so large and the way its organized (by business unit) it frequently happens that there a project redundancies etc.

    Advice to Management

Sears has a great value proposition and it needs to continue to make hard decision to return to profitably and do right by its members, associates and employees.

    Cons

retention rate is low for newer employees. people have either worked here their whole life or they will work here a few years and leave. very political to move up in the company. negative vibe and culture most of the time.

    Pros

At the business unit level the people are very collaborative and team oriented. It's not a high pressure environment, except during certain times of the year (e.g. planning season). The Home Services business is complex and challenging so you're engaged in the job every day.

    Cons

The greatest downside is mismanagement of the retail operations of the company to the point where one wonders if it can be salvaged. Is Sears irrelevant in the eyes of the consumer? It may very well be. And if it is it's only a matter of time before Sears goes the way of Woolworth's or Montgomery Ward.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and candid with the employees about the strategy. For years there have been grand statements about building an integrated and leading retailer. Your actions have contradicted these assertions as stores fall into disrepair, merchandise sits on the shelves awaiting markdown, and customers continue to flock to competitors en masse.

    Pros

Large organization that will expose you to whole gamut of Retails - from clothes to tools to home appliances to electronics

    Cons

The current state of affairs with constantly shifting re-organization and re grouping easily over shadows the opportunity to grow.

    Advice to Management

Create an identity for Sears and Kmart which today are almost an after thought, except in home appliance and other hard businesses for Sears

    Pros

My co-workers are all great hard working people.
Good feeling of team work and co-collaboration on projects.
Exposure to new technologies and mobile platform.

    Cons

Overly aggressive delivery dates across all projects. Almost unattainable.
Poor treatment and no communication from upper management.
A lot of people are leaving but we are not allowed to backfill the positions.
    No worklife balance.

    Advice to Management

Talk to the people that work for you and actively engage them in your vision and strategy. Thank those working hard and completing delivery on time. If people cannot be compensated financially, look for alternatives.
