I have been working at Sears full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Specific to the non-retail side of SHC's business, there are amazing challenges to work on that many early/mid-career employees wouldn't have at other companies until much later in their careers. You will be exposed to myriad opportunities to transform commerce and retail in non-traditional terms. There are innovative tools for members (customers) and employees, which are helpful when exploring what this organization has to offer. If you can think outside the box, you'll have a great place to apply your thinking.

    Cons

This is not the place for the easily frustrated or traditionalist. Make no mistake, the CEO is not interested in running a classic retail operation, his thinking is, appropriately, on the future of commerce.

Benefits are very expensive relative to market comparisons and compensation is largely static, once you are in the door (not impossible to get a raise, but there is no annual merit review process).

    Advice to Management

Align on the strategy that will differentiate Sears, Kmart, and ShopYourWay from the competition, and clearly articulate that to both the market and your own employees.

I have been working at Sears full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work-life balance. Casual dress code. Extremely flexible work schedule with telecommuting 1 day per week.

    Cons

Company is not in great shape and upper management is a revolving door. New management with new direction every 6 months. Constantly changing priorities due to constantly changing management

    Advice to Management

Pick a direction. Communicate it. Stick to it.

I worked at Sears (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with and some of them are highly creative.

    Cons

The company has been badly mis-managed over the last number of years. Initiatives come and go, sometimes within a number of months. Face it, Eddie doesn't know retail, or how to stop the bleeding. No one knows if they'll have a job tomorrow, so a lot of people have checked out.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to save the company. You've put some good people in place, now let them do their jobs without making them fight.

    Pros

Autonomy over your work and ability to take on roles

    Cons

Can't innovate, terrible product and IT infrastructure, and there is a huge feeling of complacency here.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of everyone, bring in new managers and ideas

I worked at Sears full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible work from home and office hours.

    Cons

You never know if today is your last day of employment. Complete lack of leadership from all levels of 'management'

    Advice to Management

There is a difference between management and leadership. Learn how to lead. Be honest with your subjects. Bad news sucks. Begin lied to and deceived by your boss only makes it worse.

I worked at Sears full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are still some bright minds left there, if one can find them. Many business units offer many opportunities for career enhancements

    Cons

Worst Benefits, almost no annual bonus for years, below par salary, politics, almost empty pockets for new projects, leaderships changes every 2 years

    Advice to Management

In today's environment, a retail company cannot be run as a hedge fund.

I have been working at Sears full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

After 6 months, allowed to telecommute one day per week. Wish it were more.

    Cons

BU's compete against each other; not good for company as a whole. Therefore, you feel like you're on a sinking ship.

    Advice to Management

    Allow more telecommuting.
