I worked at Seaspan Marine full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Full dental and extended health.. I miss that a lot - Good pay, 6% extra RRSP matching and usually a 10% bonus - Nice gym/sauna built and paid for by the owner's rockstar son - CEO is great, along with some execs

    Cons

    - You need a car - You must go to work early because traffic is hell - Some incompetent people make you seriously ponder "how the heck did he/she get hired..." - Consultants get paid wayyyy more than salaried for questionable projects. There was a guy getting paid $1000 per day for a project that went nowhere

    Advice to Management

Promote from within. Try to find more permanent talent. Some teams could use more youthful workers with fresh ideas.

I worked at Seaspan Marine full-time

    Pros

Some amazing people both in the Yard and Corp office. Miss them lots. Interesting work. Passionate and brutally honest CEO! Great company to end your career at. Corp cares about staff on a personal level. Contractors very well compensated.

    Cons

Along with the great people, there are still too many bad apples. This can lead to petty grudges and stalled projects. There are those that would rather play it safe than make a single decision. IT applications team has a revolving door - Missed out on a lot of skilled employees due to lack of vision/foresight. The dept is left without any real direction. Salary is not competitive.

    Advice to Management

Review why good people are leaving. Plan ahead, promote from within. Engage and challenge IT group to stimulate some productivity.

    I worked at Seaspan Marine

    Pros

Most people who work for Seaspan are good, hardworking individuals. Everyone is friendly for the most part. Pay is okay.

    Cons

Reporting to an IT applications manager who has zero skill, background, or education in the field. Hard to work in place where you are told not to work with or help certain people/depts due to internal conflicts/grudges. Very low moral of staff and everyone in the company hates department and manager. No team environment - everyone out for themselves. Office space is old and there is no parking. Driving to and from... the North Shore is terrible as the roads cannot handle all the traffic. The train is terrible too!

    Advice to Management

Do due diligence when hiring such as background and reference checks because there are reasons many of the employees you hire were fired from their last job that work for Seaspan. Hire from the outside if no candidate is available internally.

I have been working at Seaspan Marine full-time

    Pros

Employees here are empowered to realize their full potential with myriad opportunities to train and do really well in their jobs. Free onsite gym, free hot beverage provided. There are also lots of social events and perks. Nice natural environment, friendly coworkers, group yoga, great health benefits, flex hours, supportive leaders and excellent pay make this company one of the best employers to work for.

    Cons

Traffic is quite horrible if you drive and do not live within the vicinity. Start early and leave early if you can so traffic congestion will not be an issue.

    Advice to Management

Do not lose sight of the fact that your most important asset are your employees who work very hard to make Seaspan a great company that it is today.

I worked at Seaspan Marine full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Good smart people, long storied history, great equipment, growing safety culture, a lot of passion for the marine transportation business

    Cons

Terrible Morale, Executive has zero vision or ability to make decisions, tunnel vision, threatening tyrant for a CEO - needs to read a book on authentic leadership

    Advice to Management

Stop faking that you actual want to follow Jim Collins' philosophies, start actually living your core values

I worked at Seaspan Marine full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Everyday is different. Tasked with doing the right thing for both employee and company. Helping people return or stay at work as a result of an injury. Working with great people who care about the employee and making a difference

    Cons

Neighbouring business produces toxic dust. Traffic to and from North Van offices terrible. Wellness department understaffed.

    Advice to Management

Keep caring for and supporting your staff as they grow the rtw process. The wellness department is your best link between union and management.
