I have been working at Seattle Central Community College part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Flexibility to teach what you want. Quarterly feedback and observation is helpful. Friendly workplace. Diverse environment with freedom to express yourself.

    Cons

Cramped office/no office for part-time faculty. Lack of communication between part-time and full-time faculty. You are pretty much on your own if you are part-time. No job security.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Seattle Central Community College part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The students are wonderful. Ditto, the collaboration among faculty. The 401k matching program is good (although they're matching a high percentage of a very low salary), as are the medical benefits.

    Cons

You will likely reach your ceiling here quickly as a faculty member. Full-time opportunities are increasingly rare, and part-time faculty jobs are notoriously unstable. Essentially, being on faculty is not sufficiently remunerative to support a life in Seattle. Further, there's a large degree of disparity between the way that teachers are paid and the workload they're expected to carry from division to division.... Administration resists changing toward equity, citing the very real cost of doing so. This year, teachers were given a 4% increase, after a year-long battle over the new contract. This after years of no increase at all. Every year I've worked there, I've made less money. In an environment in which everything from pay to class size to seniority is contractually negotiated, expect gains to be minimal, and to lose something every time you gain. Bottom line: faculty are not happy here.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the bloat in administrative salary overhead, and invest in your teachers by improving their standard of living. The new living for teachers that's being built is a nice idea, but ultimately seems wasteful comparative to simply paying teachers enough to live in a place of their choosing. The cost to you of not doing so will be that competent faculty will simply go elsewhere.
