    Pros

    SGEN's technology and products can and will have a tremendously positive impact on patient's lives and the future of oncology. There are a lot of hard-working, smart, and talented people working here in every functional area. The company does try hard to keep the patient at the center of its efforts and scientific endeavors.

    Cons

    Unfortunately, the SGEN corporate culture is toxic. You would hope that such a data-driven company would be a meritocracy, but sadly, it isn't. Fear-mongering and bullying play a significant role at key levels of management making it hard for even the best employees to affect positive change. Career advancement and mentoring appear to be nonexistent, leading to a high turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

    Identify the highest performing individuals and partner with them to determine what it takes to retain and promote good talent. Don't sweep negative, endemic culture issues under the rug - focus more on what's best for the business and less on creating a "tow the line" mentality that disenfranchises the best and brightest. The basis of the company is great technology and a commitment to patients - don't let a few bad apples poison the lot!

    Pros

    All company meetings every Friday are a nice way to learn what's happening in different areas and it's nice to see the president on a weekly basis. It helps keep the small biotech feeling that most people in this industry can appreciate. Pay was fair and seemed within the range of other local biotech. Benefits include stock options and ok health/dental plan.

    Cons

    Some managers do not have the right skill set to manage others and it seems like once they reach the Director level, they aren't held accountable to anyone for their actions. This leads to mass exodus of employees under one leader. I don't think this is anything specific to Seagen, but make sure you get a good feeling for management style before you accept a position. I wasfortunate to have an amazing Director, but I saw several good people leave due to poor communication/relationships with their manager.

    Advice to Management

    Continue to empower your employees to make decisions and support them when it is the best decision for the science and the company. We appreciate having autonomy (if earned) and use positive reinforcement - employees don't want to just get the nasty grams when they have missed a timeline or objective measure. This type of negative reinforcement will only breed the behavior of people performing just enough to avoid reprimand.

    Pros

    Surface efforts to encourage team atmosphere. Encourages involvement in charity efforts, particularly in oncology. Decent compensation.

    Cons

    Seniority and title are everything! Actively discouraging of outside of the box ideas, particularly if they come from "lesser" employees.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to ideas and concerns of all employees!

    Pros

    There are chances to learn about every aspect of biotech if you want to learn.
    Reasonable time off.

    Cons

    A lot of micro-management from people that aren't actually your manager. Annoying.
    Not actually in Seattle.

    Advice to Management

    Pay attention to why people are leaving the company. Some of us moved for family. Some others just had horrid, horrid experiences. Try to fix the latter.

    Pros

    Seattle Genetics has grown to be one of the top biotech companies in the Seattle area. It is known as the place to be because it is a growing company with a great product and pipeline. The pay is fair and benefits are really good. The common thread across all departments is that everyone is very respectful of each other. Overall, it's one of the best and most productive work environments I've been in.

    Cons

    Contrary to the company name, Seattle Genetics is not actually located in Seattle. It is headquartered in Bothell which is about 25 miles north of Seattle proper.

    Advice to Management

    The CEO is too vested in the day to day sometimes. He needs to focus on the bigger picture/strategic decisions. The company should also be more open to flex time.

    I worked at Seattle Genetics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    This company will help save many lives. I like their vision and goals and where it's going. CEO is great. Benefits are competitive with other biotech company which tend to have great medical/dental/retirement plans. Seattle Genetics is no exception.

    Cons

    The IT department is old school and seems to be staying that way. Behind on everything. Lots of growing pains and completely reactive. The were transition when I was there and it seemed neither for better or worse.

    Advice to Management

    Get some positive leadership within IT. Everyone was very negative and brought the energy way down when it needed it most. Find people you can stand by and won't throw you under the bus. Someone like the Director of Facilities who was positive uplifting and encouraging.

    Interesting technology with potential to discover a blockbuster drug
    Growing company
    Nice people

    Cons

    The middle management is very controlling and too involved in micromanaging daily details.
    The information sharing is disorganized and usually without a clear purpose.
    HR dismisses employee complaints and/or suggestions for improvement as irrelevant.
    The career ladder requires most scientists to manage people, but the company does not train its scientists to be effective employee managers.
    The IT department is lousy.
    Not yet a profitable company
    Top heavy, with more hiring in above than promoting from below

    Pros

    Good pay and nice location. A lot of truly great coworkers. The benefits are good. SeaGen's work makes a difference in people's lives.

    Cons

    Certain managers have no clue how to lead or motivate employees. Understaffing and stifling micromanagement are not effective leadership styles.

    Advice to Management

    Spend less time trying to get honest negative reviews removed from the internet and spent more time correcting the problems that lead to these reviews. Improvement starts by identifying your weaknesses, not erasing the evidence.

    Pros

    Cutting edge in technology and standards. All the most recent standards and tools are deployed. Variety in work experience. Become a lead in a short time period.

    Cons

    No life. Very hard to get through a work day in the office. The head of clinical programming controls everyone by setting his own agenda and deciding what everybody else do and how they do it and when. The meetings are a one-man show where he calls the shots in a controlling talk. Others have to sit stiff and silent listening. No one shares their thoughts and ideas in an open and friendly atmosphere. The thought is that otherwise, they would be facing the wrath of the anger, translated as a threat to their financial livelihood. No smiles, laughs.. Just work and leave. Its made obvious that you are not trusted, your ideas, suggestions, questions are not welcome. Just do what is told and get out.

    Advice to Management

    Let employees live a little. Just because they are paid doesn't mean that you to have suck the last ounce of life out of them and prove that you are very efficient.
