    Advice to Management

You're not just managing any business, you're managing a business that directly affects lives. You see profits, but your profits are endangering patients. Listen to your staff.

I have been working at Select Medical full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people/ coworkers are the very best. The patients are very complicated and require a team effort of care. The experience gained from caring for such a complicated patient helps the healthcare professional to improve the skills and experiences.

    Cons

This is a for profit organization which does not provide the opportunity for continued education in addition to very little room for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

Investing in the employee will be an investment in the organization.

I worked at Select Medical full-time

    Pros

They have a new grad training program, but you have 6 months to be considered on your own. Too many policies and procedures that current staff do not follow nor even know about. CNA's brown nose to nurses they like and then refuse to help nurses they don't like who really need help. You are pushed to make patient's happy (because this is their $$) but then they complain when you stay over to finish documentation. Charge nurse and CNA will lie about you so they don't get in trouble (especially if your new). Some nurses will help but only for a little while.

    Cons

This is a complex environment due to the nature of being an ICU step-down. Don't get involved if your a new graduate RN. This is too complex because you can't specialize in any area. You are thrown in there with all and every, including behavioral patients!!!!

    Advice to Management

If you do a new grad program, allow the new grads 12 months to be as efficient as the ones who have been there a long time. There are some who have been there a long time, but they came when it was much easier and grew with the company. This is too complex now of a company to put new nurses into this.

    Pros

    Laid back environment, great employees

    Cons

The management acted more like friends to the employees they liked and the ones they didnt they downed constantly. They were absolutely horrible management.

    Advice to Management

Act more like management and not friends

The company over works you and you don't really have many options for growth through the company.

    Pros

working with a team, the rehab brands the are supported are very great in the industry. and of the best in class.

    Cons

year by year the health benefits get more expensive and cover less of my family. they do not offer any plan that covers 100% as they did for years. The company is not very attentive to proactively changing and upgrading tech. the computer systems are very old and limited staff to support the systems. corporate is so focused on always saving money and not following ITIL standards. Allot of office politics thruout. very reactionary. always putting out fires.

    Advice to Management

micro management is thru out ISS. no real leadership or respect from staff. allot of folks are not happy and nothing ever seems to happen. when problems are identified across campus it takes months and months to try and get something done. For a large company they really are managed and run like a small IT shop locally. Not impressed as management doesn;t like to see confict in the ranks so allot goes un changed

I worked at Select Medical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Introduced and worked with some very nice people, although few and far between. Also, paid the bills while looking for another position at a different company

    Cons

High turnover and never enough coverage for the front desk. Employees who are low performers are rewarded while the hard working employees are expected to do even more and treated poorly. Management doesn't seem to really care about anything but the numbers and not concerned over the real issue...why does everyone leave. A recent employee was two days away from her 90 days and could not even stay.
Patients are treated like cattle and the main concern is new patients getting on the books. Does not seem to matter if they come back, just as long as that first appointment is completed so that a EVALUATION payment code can be used ( that is where the money is)
This company constantly says they are the number on place that people want to work...funny no one stays. PT's are always hired right out of school and Then over worked and just waiting for experience to place on their resume in order to find a different and better company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Care about your Patients and your staff. Maybe clean house with management and start over. I think the worst employment experience I all my years of working was at the Carter Rehab Center, maybe start with that.

I have been working at Select Medical (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is ok, competitive to area. Busy usually; they try to have fun events to keep employees and customers happy, especially for holidays.

    Cons

Supervisors are unprofessional, management finds any reason to not give raises, turn over is huge, heavy patient loads making it unsafe for the nurses because they are overwhelmed by assignments, patients for one Nurse are scattered all over the units so nurses are exhausted at the end of the shift, no extra pay for preceptors, benefits suck, no vacation time offered, points given for ridiculous reasons.

    Advice to Management

Train your nurses for longer, choose more professional, helpful people to be in supervisory positions, be flexible with the schedule and sick time for people with children, praise good workers and don't ignore poor workers.
