    Pros

Family oriented, been in business over 90 years.

    Cons

No room for advancement within the company when you've been there too long.

    Advice to Management

Look at the talent you have, mentor more.

I worked at Selective Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, good benefits, good training opportunities, and overall nice facility to work in.

    Cons

No growth potential. Company seems to have a lot to offer as far as development of employees goes, but then there are no jobs to move into. I would have stayed at the company if there were more opportunities to me to move up.

I have been working at Selective Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Selective has very good products, knowledgeable people, a good agency plant and many long-term employees. The bonus plans make total compensation rewarding, but the goals are very difficult to meet. Without the bonus, if you are in a production role, the financial reward for the hours/effort that must be expended is not in balance with the requirements of the position. Flexible working environment (ability to work remotely) is a major plus, but can also be a deterrent from feeling connected to others in the company and to knowing what is going on in the company in general.

    Cons

Selective has extremely high work loads and goals for production with a large amount of home office oversight/personnel, report writing and little technical support and administrative help. The amount of data is overwhelming, difficult to find and to interpret. Communication from home office to field is poor at times. Many managers have been with company for many years (and with Selective only) and are not open to thinking that there may be a alternate and/or better ways to do things and they are not very inclusive to outsiders who are not long-term Selective employees.

    Advice to Management

To retain good people, goals should be attainable and realistic. When a significant amount of production staff is not meeting goals, management should adjust accordingly or good people will leave and in the future, they will be harder to find because new job seeks will avoid carriers with expectations that are very significantly higher than the competition.

    Pros

It's a job. Pay is fair.

    Cons

Micro-management, unskilled managers, outdated systems, HR lacks empathy and willingness to support employees below management.

    Advice to Management

Outsource HR dept, treat people with respect

I worked at Selective Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are way above average -8.5% 401k contribution, nice annual bonus etc. Coworkers are wonderful for the most part.

    Cons

Workload was crazy - more like a 60-70 hour week than a 40 hour. Part of the problem was corporate management kept coming up with new (and largely unnecessary) job duties without taking any away.

    Advice to Management

Review the time it takes to fulfill all the nifty new ideas you come up with and proceed accordingly when adding them to job duties. What can be taken away when adding something new?

I have been working at Selective Insurance (More than a year)

    Pros

Culture, tight knit. Flat hierarcy, access to mamagement, small regional teams make it easy to identify your individual contributions to company success.

    Cons

Organization seems hypocritical by instituting a strategic imperative to attract and retain top talent, yet there is no clear path to promotion, senior positions are largely being filled externally, and compensation seems to lag beyond industry averages.

    Advice to Management

Look to recognize talent, ambition and success of current employees and fast track them for more senior roles. This would serve to continually motivate top preformers, and may improve the morale of employees overall.

    Pros

Above-average pay per tech position. Clean commute in a rural location. Held the line fiscally through a tough time

    Cons

Old-boys management, zero mobility. No management of expectations with every team allowed to demand everything of the dev staff all at once, so no way to schedule and manage anything. Pure pressure, and personality-based system of promotion. Hanging on to old systems, zero innovation, zero mobile app approach.

    Advice to Management

The 21st century is waiting for you. Grab a seat before they run out.
