Pros
I can only speak on behalf of the team I was assigned to, but there was fair work life balance. The company does make efforts to be transparent with the operation team as far as project outlook.
Cons
Worked at Sellen Construction for two years in Seattle, Washington. Overall, the work-life balance was good, and I enjoyed some of my coworkers. However, there were noticeable cliques within the company, which made it challenging to feel fully integrated. One major drawback was the lack of clear advancement opportunities and structure. The company seemed to have a “sink or swim” approach, leaving employees to figure things out on their own. As someone with only two years of prior construction experience, this was not the supportive environment I needed to grow professionally. Another concerning aspect was the company’s heavy reliance on tech projects, primarily centered around Microsoft and Amazon. Unfortunately, when the tech industry experienced a slowdown, Sellen Construction suffered as well, leading to layoffs on the operations side. The lack of a diverse backlog put employees at risk. My personal experience with the layoff was disappointing and unprofessional. The executives provided no recognition for the hard work I contributed to the company. When I inquired about the reasons for my layoff, one executive made a condescending comment about my intelligence and critical thinking skills, which felt disrespectful and unnecessary. Moreover, Sellen Construction showed little interest in investing in their employees’ development or providing training opportunities, which further hindered career growth. In conclusion, Sellen Construction has its strengths in work-life balance, but the lack of support, limited project diversity, and unprofessional handling of layoffs are areas that need significant improvement. Potential employees should consider these factors before joining the company.
