I worked at Seminole County Government full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Cost of living in the area relatively affordable
Some people genuinely want you to succeed and will help you climb the ladder
Opportunities for internal promotion depending on department

    Cons

    Low pay
    Micromanagement
Low employee moral (many people are just waiting to retire)
    Cut throat environment
    "Good ol' boy" system
You have to do the work of 2-3 people without receiving proper compensation
    Unrealistic deadlines
Not enough work-life balance. Management is not fond of employees taking time off.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with current business trends and try to create a more progressive environment. I know this is a government agency, but change is a good thing and will boost employee morale.

I have been working at Seminole County Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Paid time off is generous. Individual branches are managed well. It is rewarding to help the public and encourage literacy.

    Cons

No raise based on performance. No recognition for success. Bad upper management. Oppressive atmosphere. Working weekends and week nights. Can't take vacation time in the summer because of summer reading.

    Advice to Management

Recognize and embrace successful employees instead of shutting them down.

    Pros

The benefits package and work life balance is nice. You get a good deal of time off which is needed in this environment.

    Cons

No appreciation of staff, politics are absolutely atrocious! Upper management and commissioners in no way follow the County Mission Statement or values.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to start to appreciate and value staff! Do what's right in regards to the citizens (tax payers) and staff.

I worked at Seminole County Government full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits including health, dental, federal holidays off, and FRS retirement. Easy to move around once you're in and network with employees in different departments.

    Cons

Overall low morale among employees, especially those that have been with Seminole County for 10+ years. Employees are undervalued for their hard work and dedication. Sick time and personal leave and one in the same. Not enough professional development/management training opportunities available. The amount of work versus compensation does not add up.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at why there is an extremely high turnover rate. The system of management needs to be overhauled big time at every level.

I have been working at Seminole County Government full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Paid time off and decent healthcare are the only things worthwhile that they offer.

    Cons

Leadership does not value its employees. Low moral and high turnover. Employees received one cost of living raise in six years while leadership gets annual raises. Annual employee reviews are rigged. Managers instructed what ratings they are able to give employees so that they fall within a given bracket to justify raises or lack thereof.

    Advice to Management

It is sad to see so many people that chose to work in the public sector be neglected by the same people they helped put in office. Your employees are your greatest asset. Invest in your people. They will care when you care.

    Pros

Probably decent benefits and a great place for dumb people.

    Cons

People are boring and stuck in a rut. No creativity. No new ideas.

    Advice to Management

Grow up. You are not nearly as good as you think you are and you'd never cut it in the private world.

I worked at Seminole County Government full-time

    Pros

The employees in individual departments are great people who want to do the right things the right way. There are a multitude of different positions in the County government for all types of people.

    Cons

The County management and some of the County Commissioners, not the individual department managers and Constitutional Offices, such as the Sheriff, Clerk of Court, Tax Collector, etc, do not value their employees. This is reflective of the high turnover rate, especially of supervisors and management personnel throughout the County and the multiple County Managers in a short period of time. Low wages and minimal cost of living and advancement opportunities make it tough on employees, especially those with families.

    Advice to Management

Employees are the life blood of County government. They are the ones who interact with the public on a daily basis. Value them and treat them fairly.

    Pros

Health benefits are ok but not the greatest. Paid leave accural is the best part of working here. FRS retirement is a plus.

    Cons

Commission rules the roost here. Polictians overstep their authority and are involved in day to day operations. Upper management is a revolving door. Average time a director or county manager stays is about 2 years. Most are forced out or fired at the will of the Commission. Pay is horrible and employees are often reminded at public commission meetings that they are lucky to have jobs. Moving up the career ladder is non-existent. Management would much rather hire from the outside than promote from within. Rank and file employees are seen as incompetent and lazy. Wasn't always this way but the work culture is abysmal and downright hostel at times.

    Advice to Management

Upper management is powerless to make improvements since they work directly for the Commission. Leaders are scared to go against Commission will.
