I worked at Sempra Energy as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people, open culture, easy to shine if you put in work and peal down a few layers. At the end of the day gas distribution is good work that helps people. Especially if you stay away from collections.

    Cons

Slow moving, risk adverse and regulated made the environment confining. Little ideas with consensus were slowly adopted. Big ideas were shunned. Lots of lifers that know exactly what the minimum is.

    Advice to Management

Create incentives for taking some risks (non-safety implication risks) and exceeding goals. Focus is around staying within budget not increasing customer value or growth.

I worked at Sempra Energy (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked with Sempra Energy on a one-year contract assignment through an agency. I was an Administrative Associate; I loved the position and the people I supported (Director, Engineers and Project Managers) were great! There is a cafeteria in the building with good food and also there are eateries all around the downtown area. The only reason I'm not still working with Sempra is because of the stupid test that you have to pass in order to be hired on as a permanent employee. The test has nothing to do with what your job duties entails. Everyone loved my work performance! I was very success in the role, but you must past the Battery test.

    Cons

You have to take and pass a Battery test after being with the company for a year that has nothing to do with your daily administrative duties.

    Advice to Management

A Battery test should not determine if you're qualified for a position or not and especially if you have being performing at a high level for a year and the entire department is truly happy with your work performance. A test should be taken when first coming aboard and it shouldn't be a battery test it should test the skills that you use daily (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint). You are losing great employees because of a stupid test that has nothing to do with your daily job duties. I believe upper management should reevaluate this process.

    Pros

This company is great in that it is very stable. During the economic downturn there were no lay-offs and some employees actually received raises. The benefits package is also great having medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K, and a defined contribution pension. There is also a yearly bonus which ranges between 10 and 23 percent based on personal performance and company performance.

    Cons

This company is slow to promote employees. This is compounded by the fact that most employees never leave. Many employees have been with the company for over 20 years. There are also some poor managers within the company. The culture of the company seems to assume that if a person masters an area of expertise they will make a great manager and that is often not the case.

    Advice to Management

Managers should be scroutinized more closely. If there seems to be a high turn-over rate within a department/organization there is probably a leadership problem within that organization. Also, consider soliciting ideas from younger employees in ways to improve the technology utilized by overhead personnel. Many things are done in highly inefficient ways because more senior employees are unwilling to change or are not willing to utilize newer, more productive and efficient technologies.

If you live in San Diego, then this is one of the few corporations that have an HQ there.

    Cons

Hard to progress as fast as if you worked for financial services/adivising/consulting and then jumped into industry.

    Advice to Management

I would say that they are doing an OK job.
