I worked at Senator John Heinz History Center as an intern

    Pros

    Fascinating archives
    Convenient location
    Cafeteria on site

    Cons

As soon as my internship was up I was treated like a stranger. The archives staff is a clique; if they don't want you, they make it very obvious

    Advice to Management

Be supportive. Your policy of not allowing volunteers to process collections makes no sense when your volunteer has an MLIS and just worked for you for 9 months.

    Pros

    -Coworkers are nice
    -Nice Location
    -Great holiday party

    Cons

Toxic culture of sexim with the current president/ceo. Female employees are treated horribly, ideas presented by female employees are usually stolen by lower level male managers then presented as their own. Compensation is low even for a non-profit. There is 0 upward mobility, the president wastes money on massive national projects that do nothing to attract local pittsburghers as well as he wastes money large cannons and firearms because he has a hard on for the 2nd amendment and has 0 respect or appreciation for archives and what they do for the community. The only reason why they keep him as CEO still is that he occasionally gets big donations from rich donors which keeps him under the radar of the board trustees when he blows half a million dollars on a replica cannon that is to damn heavy for the building.

    Advice to Management

My Advice is for the board of trustees, get rid of that loser Andy Masich.

    Pros

The location is beautiful and the event clients are mostly appreciative. Most of the staff are pleasant.

    Cons

The incentives for shift based employees are few. Raises for more experienced Event Assistant's are not approved by the administration despite pleading by department managers.

Across the organization, there is a dysfunctional culture that does not handle constructive feedback from staff, which is interpreted as negative.

    Advice to Management

Do an internal analysis to curtail waste. Also, efforts to make shift working employees feel inclusive to the organization would improve morale.

    Pros

Nice building and atmosphere. Secure location. The hours are reasonable most of the time. Not much pressure volunteer your own time for work events, as if often the case at museums.

    Cons

Low pay, even for a non-profit.
Lack of sufficient equipment to do the work efficiently. Management blames this on finances, but that was not always the case in my department.

    Advice to Management

    Hire qualified managers.
Offer employees some perks to make up for the low salaries.
