Great Organization
Jun 24, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Oakland, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Employees are really friendly and intelligent, very passionate about the mission. Positive workplace environment. They offer great benefits (health, PTO, etc.).
Cons
Since it's a nonprofit, they aren't able to compensate as well as private companies. Work/life balance is also a struggle at times.

Great Mission, but Not For Everyone
Feb 10, 2022 - Administrative Assistant in Oakland, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
You get paid for working.
Cons
No respect for work/life balance from an organization that promotes the importance of family. Though there are lots of nice people doing good work (who never get credit for their efforts!), there's a lot of turnover with staff that makes the long-time employees rather cliquey, so if you don't bend over backwards to do things their exact way, you'll lose any chance for growth and success in the organization. Surprising amount of backstabbing and credit-taking from the C-Level support staff. They also get their high Glassdoor 'ratings' by 'encouraging' anonymous votes while not-so-secretly pressuring you to vote positively. Kinda like those sketchy Amazon 5-star scams.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feelings about your time at Seneca. I am happy to hear that you have been able to connect with many of the amazing and nice people who work here. Your candor and transparency about your experience, while difficult to see, is greatly appreciated. I would like to take the chance to address some of your comments, but also always welcome a direct call at any time to talk more, one on one. I am sorry to hear that you feel that the C-Level support staff solicit good reviews with any form of pressure behind it. I have sent emails asking for people to write reviews, but only if they feel they want to. Never is there an expectation to write a good review or is there pressure to put anything other than what your experience here has been. These review sites offer anonymous posting options to allow people to express their views freely. The reason we ask for reviews is to help us with recruitment: we want prospective applicants to see perspectives from a broad spectrum of Seneca people so they can develop a robust picture of our workplace. It is important to get people’s true experience working here and we would never ask for anything but that. Again, any request is completely voluntary with zero expectation from any staff member to write one or if they do write one, to put anything but the truth. I am also sorry to hear that you have felt that there is a cliquey culture with the longer tenured staff. In the anonymous agency-wide survey we just completed this month, “inclusive,” “supportive,” and “collaborative” are the most commonly used words our staff used to describe our culture. However, we do recognize that experiences can vary greatly by program and circumstance, and we definitely continue working to improve in areas that need it. I would love to hear your thoughts on ways that this could be addressed if you are willing to discuss more about your experience. Our turnover is indeed highest in our entry level positions, but Seneca’s retention rates compare quite favorably with similar nonprofits. We have a strong ethic of promoting from within the agency, and I am proud of how many of our leaders, including our CEO started in entry level positions and worked their way into leadership. We invest a great deal in training and developing our people, and we strive to provide a wide range of opportunities for growth and advancement. I am always available and eager to connect about these and any other concerns directly if you would like. Nathaniel Foster, Chief Advancement Officer

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. The work we do can be difficult, and we feel honored to have employees that are mission driven and dedicated to the children and families in their community, as Unconditional Care is the core of what we do. To that end, we are currently designing and implementing a model of supervision that will better support and train our employees in their daily work, and also help them implement self-care practices.

Supportive Foundation
Oct 16, 2014 - Anonymous Employee in Fairfield, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Seneca's commitment to supporting their employees is something I have found to be a truly unique experience, not only peer-to-peer support, but from management and above. It is very helpful in the work that we do to have a solid foundation of support in order to offer the same support to our client's. My experience working at Seneca has been such that even on days I might not want to go to work, I still look forward to the end of my day when I feel I have contributed something to the lives of our families and fellow employees.
Cons
Work/life balance can be difficult to maintain when working within Seneca's 'Unconditional Care Model.' This dilemma is an active conversation within the agency, and although discussed, is often easier said than done to manage.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts about working at Seneca. We always welcome any feedback. Seneca’s executive office has released that all qualified employees who are on the 4-week PTO (Paid Time Off) will be moved to the 5-week PTO this year as well as some additional agency changes. This enhanced benefit will help current employees have more time for a better work/life balance to do the things they are passionate about.

quality care and commitment to standards, only limited by the 24 hour day
Sep 25, 2014 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The Seneca culture is dedication to safety and collaborative care. The standards by which we are expected to adhere are top notch, and it feels good to be a part of a community that never takes the "easy" route. I get to say I love all of my co-workers and supervisors and who gets to say that?
Cons
Finding a work/life balance working with vulnerable families and adhering to high standards can be difficult. It doesn't appear that many of the direct-care positions are geared towards longevity as the salary and retirement options are lower than comparable agencies. That said, I have appreciated the level of transparency about this from the powers that be and made the choice to work here regardless because the other benefits (supervision, licensure support, culture, training) outweighed the concerns. I may feel differently in another 5 years but I'll worry about that then.

Seneca family of Agencies values their employees. They strive to only hire the best. My coworkers are smart and motivated.
Cons
Work/life balance is difficult. You work long hours and the paper work never ends. It feels that sometimes, management treats employees as disposable. Stress on the job is high and it's hard to meet expectations. High turnover rate.
