I worked at Sentry full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great money and benefits for the area. The maternity leave is their best perk. 6 weeks paid and falls under FMLA.

    Cons

No work/life balance. Over worked and under paid. Very stressful. Unrealistic expectations. Salary means working 6 days a week at times. Expect anxiety attacks. This is not a 40 hour/week job no matter what the trainer tells you...

    Advice to Management

Show interest in the employees who want to be there and want to promote. Don't overwork the employees who actually do their jobs. Doing other people's work isn't something I should have had to do, my own workload was more than enough.

I have been working at Sentry full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I honestly feel like this company is dedicated to treating its employees well. On the whole, great benefits package, room for advancement, and work-life balance.

Although with 10+ years at the company, I know that each area is treated differently depending on management. I've had great bosses and bad bosses. Most of the negative reviews here are from either Claims or Sales which are very high pressure jobs by nature.

Very financially stable company that is geared toward tech and customer service improvements.

    Cons

As with all insurance companies (maybe all big business?), there appears to be the good-ole-boys club mentality. Seemingly unqualified men are promoted ahead of women. There are no VPs in any of the critical insurance operations - claims, IT, investments, etc., even though the company is comprised of more than 50% women.

    Advice to Management

You're a good company but could be great if you'd unleash the talent of over half your employees.

I have been working at Sentry full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A family atmosphere with genuine team drive and spirit. Many long term employees with advancement opportunities. Hard work is recognized and home office is providing the necessary staff for our growth.

    Cons

Health benefits could be better, lower deductibles and more options in our benefits package. Each office should have some local perks / discounts available to them just like home office.

    Advice to Management

Reinstate the bright ideas and ask employees what amenities they would like to see in their offices.

I worked at Sentry full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people there were the best part. When I left, that is what I missed most.

    Cons

This position was tough because to company refused to hire enough claims personal. It was also tough because the company was in Wisconsin and the culture did not mesh well.

    Advice to Management

Address the staffing issues, less computer systems and micromanagement.

I worked at Sentry full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The coworkers were wonderful, and the benefits were okay. They may offer a settlement in return for a release when you leave the company.

    Cons

This company has been short staffed since they purchased Viking Insurance, years ago. Micromanagement is everywhere. How many phone calls are made out and answered are documented each day. There are reports on everything, and emails sent daily on how terrible a job everyone is doing. Most people work at least 50, if not 60 hours a week. It is impossible to get the job done in 40 hours. Supervisors are constantly in files requiring more work to be done.

Turnover is rampant, with over 25% off people having leftover this year! Management has little sympathy and the claims just keep coming in.

Human resources is unprofessional and is not to be trusted.

    Advice to Management

You are making a ton of money, so figure out a way to keep your employees. The quality of the files is terrible because your adjusters are overworked and mistakes made are going to cost you more in the long run.
