    Pros

Sentry exists in a world that starts on January 1st, and ends on December 31st. If you work hard and get a good territory where you can find yourself with competitive premiums, you just might be a superstar. Enjoy it for the year, and then get after it as it will all reset the following year.

    Cons

Management is very important and expects to be treated as such, while they work hard, it is not always efficient.

    Advice to Management

Teamwork starts at the top... if the upper-level managers can't get a long, then the reps won't either.

I have been working at Sentry full-time

    Pros

Benefits, company car, 6% match, home office, flexible schedule.

    Cons

Really disconnected from how the world of insurance (and sales) really operates and doesn't care. No concern at all if they're competitive. May be fine for Sentry, but not okay for my long term financial outlook. Required to be specialist in 4 major areas. Commercial insurance is not really all that different than other products but yet they charge significantly more. 401k is a cheap facsimile of other major carriers. Group benefits are significantly less desirable than other major competitors. Life insurance portfolio is ridiculous and about 30-40% more than competition. All positive reviews are from new employees (pretty sure that 2.9 star average would go WAY down if you took out all the reviews made in the first 6 months of employment!), people in Stevens Point, WI, or individuals who need to validate for themselves why they're still working here. Company is located in Stevens Point, WI and thats about 90% of the issue. What kind of real talent can you attract to live in Stevens Point, WI?!! This place is fine to get licensed and to learn a little bit about the industry, then it's time to get the heck out and find a real insurance sales job. Save yourself some time and grief and just avoid them altogether.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that sales is the conduit to the customer and treat them accordingly. It seems like the culture of the company is to blame the entire salesforce for failing to hit goals that came from nowhere. Perhaps the real issue are the many shortcomings of the company. Maybe all the pointing of fingers should be internalized.

I have been working at Sentry full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits, 401K, PTO.
    Friendly co-workers.
    Great CEO,

    Cons

An Operations Support Supervisor is a micro-manager. Gossips about employees with other employees. Shares confidential information about HR meetings/disciplinary actions with other employees. Is threatened by employees with more education and experience and will find ways to "put them in their place." Never admits any mistakes, places blame on others. Does not train employees (relies on a bible of procedures that change constantly.) Denies requests for re-training. Several employees feel bullied and HR does not do anything about this, instead makes these employees feel that they are the problem.

Workload is too heavy, constantly short-staffed, too many responsibilities fall upon the processors and support staff. No real direction or leadership.

Supervisor do not truly delegate, claim they spend 90% of their time doing processor work.

UW Managers only hire men. Do not hire based on education or experience. Usually hires external candidates. Only hire people who suck up. Say they promote positivity in the workplace but all of the direct reports gossip about agents, co-workers and supervisors but because they are underwriters they are treated like gods.

Upper managers clueless about what really goes on in the department. The hardest working employees are ignored, bullied and railroaded. Says they are proud to hire and promote from within the department, but there have only been two of five instances in which this has actually happened.

Underwriters talk about how stupid the agents are and how they can't do anything right. They have said they need to have common sense knocked into them. Management overlooks it because they write all the premium.

The managers claim they encourage an open door policy and that they want us to come to them with concerns, but if they don't agree with the information, you will be targeted and marked as a problem employee.

HR assigned to our department does not respond to requests/concerns; very rude, interrupts often, does not address the issues with management, makes the employees feel like they are "bad employees."

Extremely high turnover rate because good employees are leaving bad managers. Those who stay have it "good" in the department.

    Advice to Management

Truly listen to your employees. Do not bully them. Do not make them feel inferior or beneath you. Provide more training on the job. (Not during lunch hours.) Offer more opportunities for advancement, promotion, learning.

Employees are afraid to come to you because we feel that you will retaliate - we have witnessed good employees being treated poorly and made to feel inferior.
