I worked at Serco Group full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good colleagues at Serco, delivering some great results for their clients and in the local office there is a good team ethic,

    Cons

No real cons, always a lot of opportunity but you had to go out there and find them,

    Advice to Management

Serco culture is second to none, management and staff alike like the corporate values

I worked at Serco Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great colleagues and relaxed environment

    Cons

Poor management, no value as an employee, practically used for the benefit of Serco and not at all for learning as an apprentice. All apprentice's morale was low throughout the year. Definitely would not advise anyone to do an IT apprenticeship with Serco in Birmingham! Had no manager for majority of the year! Even when we spoke to senior managers about our experience, no one seemed to care and done absolutely nothing to help! We started with 11 apprentices at birmingham, and at the moment there's only 4 - says a lot! They also gave us half the load of courswork for the apprenticeship scheme in the last 3 months and expected us to do it all in our own time despite numerous requests for a few hours a week in work

    Advice to Management

    Learn to be managers!

    Pros

Fortunately it was a short term contract

    Cons

The atmosphere within the project wasn't´t good and no team spirit

I have been working at Serco Group (More than a year)

    Pros

4 core values of Care, pride, Innovation and Trust are generally adhered to and a good organisation to work for.

    Cons

Business Unit MDs have too much autonomy so very little corporate identity as a result. Little cross-organisational collaboration and often chaotic.

    Advice to Management

Formalise a corporate approach beyond the SMS, and forge corporate identity. Challenge poor HR decision making and accept that you pay well below average in many of the industries you operate in, except for senior execs whose pay is not affected by a policy of holding down rates.

I have been working at Serco Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Massive company so there is the possibility to 'have a go' in different departments.
    - Senior management recognise talent, but can only offer job variety as opposed to improved salary/career prospects.

    Cons

    - Salaries across-the-board are well below those of competitors.
    - Those in middle-management positions are only in those positions because of seniority. On the whole, managers are self-serving, poor leaders and abuse their position - probably because their salaries don't demand high-calibre leaders.
    - The opportunities that are available are only 'experience'; there is little room for progression. Most jobs here can be regarded as 'stop-gaps'.

    Advice to Management

Be tougher on team leaders and show that staff are valued by paying a better wage. You will attract and retain higher calibre staff if the wage was closer/better than those of your competitors.

I have been working at Serco Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great vision and leadership from Rupert, Ed and Angus.

    Cons

Poor silo management approach, and lack of people who actually care about people *their staff*. Too financially driven, people are numbers on a balance sheet.

Talent programme is still struggling to come of age.

Unwillingness to deal with rude and difficult managers/senior managers and under-performing "sleeping" on the job managers has allowed a poor culture to develop.

    Advice to Management

Sort out the continued silo management thinking, and whatever happened to Innovation. Also Trust, Care and Pride could do with a poke! - Rupert breathes this and Proud of It, but who can tell if this is a bumper sticker for the rest of Serco.

I worked at Serco Group as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Was able to work flexibly around my school hours. Friendly young workforce. Offered free training as long as I stayed with them for a year.

    Cons

Absolutely awful management, I felt like they didn't care about me at all. No communication between upper and lower staff.

    Advice to Management

Ask your staff for tips on how to improve service. Don't take the staff for granted, that's why the turnover is so high.
