I worked at Serif Europe full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There's free fruit delivered 2-3 times a week A good start if you're fresh out of university and are struggling to get a foot on the ladder

    Cons

Serif is a software company and is owned by people who know very little about software. As a result they make terrible uniformed decisions. They look toward a team of equally uniformed managers for advice. They are a bureaucratic company with a steep hierarchy, making getting anything done a long and tedious process. The wages here are very low. Some of the managers have an apologetic attitude and do what they...

    Advice to Management

Sell the company to someone who knows something about the software industry. Promote to management based on talent, not how long someone's been at the company. Look outside the company for new talent. Be willing to pay competitive salaries to attract real talent. Recognise and reward talent. Flatten out your hierarchy. There's no need to have so many managers, team leaders, seniors. You need much...

    Pros

Most colleagues are good to work with and there’s a good sense of working together

    Cons

The software products are poor and management don’t follow appropriate HR practices.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff better and don’t cut corners because you’re a failing business

I worked at Serif Europe for more than a year

    Pros

The incentives are fantastic, i won ipads, an xbox, and various cash incentives.

    Cons

Autocratic style of management can lead to de motivation and a natural dislike of management.

    Advice to Management

Become more collaborative and understand we live in a modernised sales era where the focus is the client and client retention as opposed to selling as much as possible.

I worked at Serif Europe full-time

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits, no overtime, interesting work although perhaps not that varied.

    Cons

Not a place to work for social aspects. Company isn't afraid to make a job role redundant if it is not of benefit to the future of the company.

    Advice to Management

I think managers need to try and engage with staff a little more, perhaps team building. Someone else summed things up well - "Join the 21st Century"

    I worked at Serif Europe

    Pros

The company is quite professional and structured, with generally competent people leading the boat. Friendly co-workers and a pleasant place to work for. Excellent work/life balance - this company does not want you working overtime - in fact quite the opposite which really stands out as a positive compared to anywhere else I've worked. Might suit an older employee with a family. Some flexibility in working times as long...

    Cons

Friendly working environment, but also quite a dull one. If you are young and looking for an exciting job - this is not the place for you. Very hierarchical in structure. Very old school with regard to modern working practices - the kind of environment that thumbs up an employee that *looks* to be working hard, whilst having a low opinion of an employee that achieves targets whilst appearing relaxed. Only really rewards...

    Advice to Management

Flatten hierarchical structure. Encourage discussion, chat and experimentation. Trust your employees, don't use perception - use hard facts as indicators of progress. Encourage employees to learn and develop. In short: join the 21st century.

I have been working at Serif Europe full-time

    Pros

Free fruit, cheap cinema tickets, part of the ride-to-work scheme, relaxed atmosphere. Good place to get your foot in the door of an industry (sales/technical support/graphic design/QA)

    Cons

Management care little for the teams beneath them, information is not cascaded down to team members nor any decisions, with regards to those that would affect how a dept. works, are discussed with those teams. These changes to 'the job' are generally implemented before making the team aware of them. Advancement within the company is next to impossible and any promotions are normally done based on how long an individual...

    Advice to Management

Sell the company on to someone who knows more about the software industry. Department managers need to be sent on a leadership course to learn about what management actually entails. Increase salaries, you will continue to lose your best talent until you do so and will be unable to recruit top talent likewise.
