I am pleased with my employment experience with SCI

Sep 19, 2013 - Maintenance/Support Services Associate in Seattle, WA

    Pros

My particular position at SCI was unique as a support services associate. I enjoyed taking care of the funeral home, supporting staff in many different ways, and doing lots of various supportive tasks and behind the scenes work. Pay is respectable, benefits are okay, and schedules are generally flexible. A very respectable choice if you have an interest in the funeral industry. SCI does everything it can to help families during the worst part of their lives.

    Cons

Health benefits are somewhat expensive; the amount you pay depends upon the plan you choose and your annual salary. The plans themselves are satisfactory but nothing to brag about. Turnover for the sales folks is somewhat high. Family Service can be a stressful position, and there is no guarantee that you are going to make sales. While everyone needs to purchase a funeral plan, not everyone will choose an expensive SCI plan and many people are going cremation these days. Being a Family Service person is a good job if you are ultra passionate about your job. Management can sometimes be rude, managers will sometimes go on rampages when they are having a bad day.

    Family Service Counselor

Dec 5, 2015 - Family Service Counselor in Bellevue, WA

    Pros

    Great 401k match; flexible work hours; work-life balance; immense income potential (The quotas are realistic for any committed sales professional); monthly bonuses; sales incentives;

    Cons

I'm a very young person in this industry. Death is a sensitive subject and you're working with people/families that are going through one of life's toughest moments. The subject matter is dense and there will definitely be periods of time that will require emotional and mental energy/strength to not let it affect your mentality outside of work. If you're not making your numbers then you make minimum wage, otherwise it's 100% commission. There's a lot of turnover in this position due to either people can't make sales as quickly as they'd like, or they can't handle the emotion aspect of it. It does take a few months to get started.

Of course we wouldn't say this in front of a family but this is just another sales job! -Quote from a high level mgr.

    Pros

The funeral directors and grounds crew give this company credibility. The majority of the FDs are compassionate individuals who truly listen to the families and recommend products and services accordingly. The grounds crew are respectable individuals who couldn't possibly make enough money for the hard work they do every day. Helping families pre-arrange their services is a gratifying job. If you have a competent, ethical manager, you are ahead of the game.

    Cons

High turnover. Chaotic work environment, poorly kept records, Unrealistic pay structure for family service counselors. Lack of communication between departments and no system in place to avoid multiple people calling the same family to generate business. Interpreting your paycheck is difficult. Top producers can get away with unethical behavior. Inappropriate language and behavior by a high level manager. The software to process contracts is archaic.

Trapped between trying to do the right thing by customers and/or employees, and trying to earn a living.

SCI does not promote a fair playing field within it's workplace

Jun 16, 2008 - Community Outreach Counselor/Family Service Advisor in Seattle, WA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

The ability to help families that are in a very difficult time of their life when they have just lost someone they love

    Cons

Promotions have more to do with brown nosing management then ability in doing one's job, no sense of fairness by management in having an equal playing field for an opportunity to make money, way to many "favorites" getting the best opportunities.

Huge turnover at the entry level position for Family Service Advisors.

Aug 4, 2014 - Family Service Counselor in Seattle, WA

    Pros

Some good training depending on the location. There is the potential to make very good money but very long hours to do so. The service they provide is necessary and very noble but also heartwrenching at times.

    Cons

Huge turnover at all levels in the sales division, and the company just doesn't care. If your in operations, maybe not so bad.

    Good company, greedy priorities

Oct 26, 2014 - Family Service Counselor in Lynnwood, WA

    Pros

Worked as family service counselor, meeting with families when loss of loved ones. Very gratifying knowing I could make a most difficult time a little easier.

    Cons

Company became more sales focused than service focused. "Get 'em while they're down" not good approach
