I have been working at Seton Healthcare Family full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great staff, the best in the city in terms of the people you get to work with. We have the best doctors for an ED too. Our managers really care. Several nurses, RTs, and other clinical staff have been there forever. which makes it really feel like a family. There is a top-notch nurse residency for new nurses. There is also a very good transition fellowship if you are interested in transitioning to a new specialty.

    Cons

The company was taking over by Ascension Health. Ascension is making things more corporate and this has an effect on morale. There is not much room to move up. We have had layoffs at least 3 times in the 10 years I have worked for the Seton network. I wanted to apply for an Infection Preventionist position but about a month before I could apply, the head of Infection Prevention was laid off because they eliminated her position. This made me scared to apply. I had friends try and apply for supervisor positions only to find out that the positions they were applying for were eliminated before they could even interview. They also eliminated jobs for Spanish interpreters, Social Workers, and Child Life specialists who are still greatly needed. These job eliminations put a lot more stress on nurses who have to do more and more with less and less.

    Advice to Management

My direct supervisor, managers, and director are great. I do think that upper management, thoes above the director postion, could advoacte for more support staff. We really need our Spanish interpretors back and it would be nice to have more case management help overall. Pleas consider brining back the Labor and Delivery floor to DSMC because it is in line with the Seton mission to support the indigent population and DSMC is the best place to do that.

I worked at Seton Healthcare Family part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team, for the most part everyone I got to work with were great! They make you feel like family, they care for the patients. You will learn and get to see a lot. If I get to go back to Austin I will definitely choose Seton ( DSMC). Loved this place!!!

    Cons

Short staff, can be overwhelming at times. Don't put everything on the CA's. Treat everyone equal, and don't over staff.

    Advice to Management

My manager was the best, that's all I got to say.

I have been working at Seton Healthcare Family full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Seton is run by very intelligent individuals who are focused on the long term viability of the hospitals. They are dedicated to their mission of providing the best possible patient care.

    Cons

Seton is a great place to work so you have man people who have been working there for many years. Unfortunately, often times, people get comfortable and resist change. This has caused issues when we're trying to implement technological improvements.

    Advice to Management

Seton needs more advancement opportunities for non-clinical employees. There simply aren't any except at AIS and the department is very difficult to get into without knowing someone already there. When possible, managers should be encouraged to have their employees who can work remotely, work remotely. You have a policy but managers don't take advantage of it. If they can't trust their employees to complete their work remotely, perhaps you don't have the right people in those positions.
