I worked at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are an intern or therapist it is a great learning environment as you get everything from intake to discharge, treatment planning, individual, family and group therapy. As well as working with the education department, psychiatrists/nurses, parents, and mental health techs. Helping kids and families was one of the biggest pros for me.

    Cons

Timeframes for working with families, paperwork, etc is unreasonable. Upper management doesn't really want to help you. Middle management has no power as upper management is too busy micromanaging. Units are scary and unsafe. Training is less than adequate. I had bruises regularly when I worked there and I was not with kids 8 straight hours a day.

    Advice to Management

Provide adequate pay to mental health techs so they will be more engaged in the work. Provide more training for everyone to ensure a safe work environment. Provide more opportunities for career advancement/wage advancement to give the mental health techs more to work for not pizza parties. Over staff on holidays and days you know people will call in.

I worked at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System (More than a year)

    Pros

The experience can be beneficial and you get one free meal a day.

    Cons

Management is horrid, what they do behind closed doors is corrupt. Depending where you rank on employee politics will determine your punishment. No raises or recognition for hard earned work.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees who try to actually help the children and not those who are just good covering up dirty work with paperwork.

I have been working at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Overtime and incentive pay, plus the joy of helping others. Benefits, and three full time scheduled weeks (Sunday - Thursday/ Tuesday - Saturday/ Friday - Monday) all three work weeks have 7a-3:30p/ 3p-11:30p/ 11p-7:30a

    Cons

Understaffing, understaffing and understaffing! The understaffing causes there to be dangerous working situations and causes good employees to leave the company!

    Advice to Management

Pay more to get better employees in and more of them!

I worked at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Competitive pay, flexible scheduling (PRN)

    Cons

There are numerous issues effecting the work environment including, the lack of support from staff, hostile work environment, ongoing permitting of unethical conduct towards patients and other staff, favortism vs. fair treatment, constant unprofessional behavior in general. Patients are often bullied by staff and treated in a less than dignified way. Staff who beg to differ and treat patients with dignity are met with criticism and ostracized from the majority. And your job/career could be on the line. There is a low work morale because of the tolerance for bullies and anti-team behavior. I do not recommend working here if you care about ethics at all.

    Advice to Management

In effort to improve employee retention consider improving leadership and revamping policies to enhance ethical standards within the agency.

I worked at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System (More than a year)

    Pros

In my department, there was a lot of flexibility for doctors' appointments, school functions, etc... I had a lot of job satisfaction from helping children and families.

    Cons

Upper management did not give departments the support necessary to function properly. Employees get burnt out quickly.

    Advice to Management

Shadow Mountain's upper management really needs to take care of employees to decrease turnover and create a positive work environment.

I have been working at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The thing that keeps me around is being able to work prn and choose when and where I want to work. The free meals are nice too. But that's it.

    Cons

Bad work environment. Bad management that stems from a bad leader. Pay is too low for the sensitivity and the difficulty of the job. Units are scary and pose safety hazards and the CEO refuses to update.

    Advice to Management

Treat and pay your employees better and they will do more for you and stick around longer. It will save you money not having to constantly hire and train new staff AND your patients will be happier in an environment that is more conducive to their treatment. This is supposed to be a hospital not simply a daycare for "bad kids". The menial "incentives" you offer staff mean nothing compared to just treating them like valued employees and not cheap replaceable items.

I have been working at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This job can give some first hand experience of what certain mental health problems look like first hand. For a person interested in working with children, it can be a great fit. They have a good benefits package. The mission and service to the community that is intended is very important and worthwhile.

    Cons

The pay for most positions is very poor, especially for how demanding it can be. Advancement opportunities are limited and not necessarily based on performance. Expectations are not always effectively communicated.

    Advice to Management

Promote more from within. Provide better compensation to improve employee retention rate. Follow your own policies for everyone.

I worked at Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System (Less than a year)

    Pros

The only pro is the experience you get caring for patients and the staff. There are a lot of wonderful and hard-working staff members there.

    Cons

Where do I start? The management is absurd and upper management is money hungry and manipulative. There have been accusations of fraud and other unethical practices.

    Advice to Management

Some of the middle management do a wonderful job but most of them have no power as upper management does not let the individuals run their own departments. Stop micromanaging.
