Pros
I left Shasta Head Start for a brief period thinking the grass might be greener somewhere else. It was not long before I realized that I really missed working with the positive and truly helpful people at SHS so I came running back. I get to support some wonderful educators every day and hope to be here for many years to come.

Sometimes it gets a little understaffed but that is every job so.

Pros
In 2014, I began my journey with Shasta Head Start. I quickly fell in love with their teacher-child ratios. It was amazing to have only 8 wonderful toddlers in our classroom. The ratios allowed for more 1 on 1 teaching opportunities with the children and more individualized care. I learned so much from Shasta Head Start. I learned the importance of talking to young children about emotions. I learned that it is important to let the child know that it is okay to be mad, sad, or upset. I found this to be especially important for children who have endured trauma and need a vehicle for expressing their emotions and needs. Solution cards, timers, and Tucker Turtle were used daily in our classroom. Shasta Head Start has implemented the Teaching Pyramid Model into their program. Implementing Positive Description Acknowledgement was a game changer in our classroom. We quickly noticed that our classroom atmosphere became much more positive and calm. It is with a heavy heart I have recently resigned from Shasta Head Start in search of other opportunities to support my personal and professional growth.
Cons
Shasta Head Start has been understaffed since the beginning of Covid and there have been classroom closures due to lack of staff. (Sad face)

Employment with a mission
Dec 17, 2018 - Area Manager in Redding, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Shasta Head Start is an agency that supports families and helps children prepare for school readiness. It is a great place to work if you have the desire to work with young children and their parents. They offer many hours of training in skills related to your job. The pay is comparable to similar positions but also includes paid holidays in the winter and spring. Similar to a school calendar. Its a great benefit for employees with school aged children who are off at the same time. Depending on the job, some people are off in the summer as well. They also offer medical benefits to full time employees at no cost that include a tele-med option so you can speak with a doctor without having to go into an office if needed 24/7. The staff here are supportive and offer a pleasant working environment. Staff morale is good and the agency encourages team building activities.
Cons
There are deadlines and data driven events, successful employees should probably have a good sense of time management and be able to prioritize tasks. Depending on the position, there may be some difficult or emotional situations, simply because you work with other humans big and small. Shasta Head Start does offer support to deal with this as well. Depending on the location you work at there may be some travel involved. A good driving record is required for most positions , mileage reimbursement is offered.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review! We appreciate all that you do here at Shasta Head Start.

Pros
Benefits? Decent Schedule, holiday pay
Cons
The job description was very misleading. All I did was clean. Then I would be told to do one task and before I could finish it be asked to do all these other things at once. I always came to the center with a positive attitude but always felt like the odd person out. I was respectful to my coworkers then pulled into the office to be talked to from the supervisor and another caregiver that I needed to be nice to one of the other caregivers even though I was NEVER rude to her because she was just “awkward.” I felt uncomfortable everyday I came to work because I didn’t fit in with everyone else and it almost felt as if they used it against me. I found a different job that worked for my family “something head start is big on is family.” When I was told I had to let everyone in the center know during a staff meeting I was kind about it, didn’t throw my negative experience out for discussion, I just said I found something that worked for my family. I was told there’s nothing better then head start, no congratulations, no best wishes, just made to feel what worked for my family wasn’t great because it wasn’t head start. Then they made me clean the mess they had left the day before when I wasn’t at work due to my son being sick. Looking back now I should have just grabbed my stuff and left right then. Never again.

We are so sorry to hear you did not enjoy working as a Classroom Aide. We understand the job does involve a lot of cleaning and other similar tasks. However, we will say, without a Classroom Aide's hard work, the days do not flow smoothly! Cleanliness, sanitization, & order is vital to the success of the classroom, especially nowadays. Thank you for taking time to give us feedback! We wish you the best.

The staff is friendly and working with at-risk children can be very rewarding! There are good benefits, and pay is above average for the region and job field.
Cons
The only thing I can think of as a cons to working there is that sometimes you may have a family that doesn't respect your time and will show up late.
