I worked at Shaw Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Supportive managers and senior recruiters when working in the field recruiting craft workers. Easy to network and move cross-functionally within the company.

    Cons

Difficult to move up in salary. Large pay gap between middle/lower employees and upper management.

I worked at Shaw Group (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pretty good backing if your right.

    Cons

Long sleeved rule. Management cares more if you have a cigarette off of break rather than getting the work done.

    Advice to Management

You're never going to get things done if you hire rookies.

I worked at Shaw Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Overall, the other Directors were competent

    Cons

The executive leadership was poor. Very condescending and dictatorial to work with on a daily basis

    Advice to Management

Your people are your only asset, treat them fairly and with respect and your company will flourish.

I have been working at Shaw Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is not much in way of positive feedback on this organization. Work schedule used to be flexible (4X10s), and afforded flexibility; switched over to 9/80 schedule without explanation.

    Cons

Senior management is too self-centered. Pay a lot of lip service to catch-phrases and buzzwords. Very little effort is made to improve the situation regarding mobility and/or opportunities.

    Advice to Management

    Sell to the highest bidder.

    Pros

Location to my home and that's about it...

    Cons

Complete Facade of how things work in other corporate environments. "THE Owner" is/was the main problem and now that it was bought by an equal sized company with even more immature corporate structure it will not be my choice to stay. Pay raises are a joke! 1-2% every couple of years. No Career Path unless someone gets fired or dies. They hire you for your expertise and diversity, but don't want you to voice.
Very much still a Good Ole Boy Fab Shop mentality.

    Absolute Horrible Benefits!

HR dept is the worst yet...Full of snakes!

I've worked with a few good people, but most will never make eye contact or speak. In speaking with people that have been here for years they have all voiced their opinions of how downhill the company has gone.

    Pros

You can gain some good experience in the field you want to work in, and as long as you work, your job is secure.

    Cons

The management is horrible - it is all based on friendships. None of them are educated or trained to be in a managerial position. Communication with employees is minimal. Pay is not competitive. Benefit package is ridiculous. You will get hired to do one thing, but if they find out you work hard, they will overload you with work and let others slack off. No opportunity for advancement if you don't know anybody. With the recent merger, many might not even have jobs. Raises are given every other year, and bonuses are unheard of.

    Advice to Management

REWARD YOUR GOOD WORKERS - OTHERWISE YOU WILL LOSE THEM :)

I have been working at Shaw Group full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Have the lion's share of nuclear power work.

    Cons

Management succombs to intimidation by CEO creating an environment where one cannot be open with the truth. Many of those who were hired to fill senior management positions are looking to fulfil their obligations and are not looking to rock the boat. Despite their 'value the individual' talk, this is a business. Have seen many people hired, then fired. There is no true career path in this company as most senior positions are filled from the outside. Most of the working level feel's they are just cogs in a wheel, albeit everyone is there by choice.

    Advice to Management

After the sale to CB&I and current CEO and senior management is replaced, hopefully what remains of the Shaw group will begin to function properly. Many of the 'yes' men need to be replaced with people who actually have the experience and will to perform the job.

    Pros

Some very good people, travel opportunities.

    Cons

The company doesn't seem to know it's direction. Several talented engineers (senior and junior) laid off recently for seemingly no reason.

    Advice to Management

Figure out where you're going. How can you win new work when you lay off the talent and have no resumes to put in proposals?
