I have been working at Shaw Media full-time

    Pros

Shaw Media is growing in Illinois, let's us do what we want to get the job done, focused on digital.

    Cons

Can be tough with the newspaper industry in transition. High pressure to achieve revenue results.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your good employees!

I worked at Shaw Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You become close with your direct team mates, you are all in misery together.

    Cons

Extremely low pay. After talking with a 20+ year employee, we found out we were making the same amount. The Shaw family only sees dollar signs and are arrogant and rude to the staff. No raises. Told the company was not doing well. Then layoffs, Then - HEY - we purchased another newspaper. Now less people to do more work. Rinse, lather, repeat. This happened MANY times. Then they laid off 90% of their design team and outsourced it. Sales quotas too far out of reach to make a living.
Office desks and chairs were in really bad shape. Chair was broken. Old computers and software. Don't work here.

    Advice to Management

It's such a sad, dark environment to work in. Even tho you can't control the family owned decisions, have respect for the people who are giving you their time trying to do a good job.

I worked at Shaw Media full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None. The newspaper has changed a lot since 2016. Not only do they not care about their employees they also have no idea what they are doing. If you are looking for a job in journalism I would look elsewhere.

    Cons

Low pay. The pay is sooo low you can only survive if you have a second job. Most employees are soo green and overworked they have no idea what they are doing. It’s embarrassing

    Advice to Management

    Print is dead

I worked at Shaw Media full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some great co-workers. Lots of opportunity to interact with the communty. Insurance benefits were good.

    Cons

Most managers use fear-tactics, bullying, and threats to produce results and make their numbers. Incredibly negative corporate culture. Members of Shaw family get away with terrible behavior. Lots of unpaid overtime required and low pay. Constant financial problems and layoffs. Reputation in the greater community has suffered because of mismanagement.

    Advice to Management

Just shut down the company already and move on.

I worked at Shaw Media full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work hours were pretty consistent, offered benefits, enjoyed designing advertisements for local businesses and events, close to home, offers a chance to be involved with community events and festivals

    Cons

Constantly laying people off, high turn over rate, limited room for advancement, older office building, tough audience to attract new business; People just don't read the newspaper anymore so it's super tough to get new subscribers, causing people to get let go constantly. If you get a job at Shaw, it won't last unfortunately.

I have been working at Shaw Media full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good colleagues. Rewarding work producing necessary product.

    Cons

Trouble filling open positions leads to skeleton crews. Many positions eliminated in past year (mostly through attrition). No growth opportunities. Lack of appreciation from higher ups. Disconnect between dayside and nightside/weekend workers leads to problems. No raises.

    Advice to Management

Cost of living raises would do a lot to raise morale. Filling necessary positions in a timely fashion would help everyone do their jobs better.

    Pros

Great people, great mentors. HR does a great job bringing everyone together. Good energy at Shae

    Cons

No cons! Pay isn't best but you can work your way up. Everyone has to start somewhere so I don't complain.

    Advice to Management

More involved with lower level employees. Sometimes people feel a little lost and left out - maybe that's to be expected, though!
