Interesting Work, but Poor Work-Life Balance

Aug 29, 2021 - Legal Assistant in New York, NY

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Legal Assistants at Shearman are treated like Associates, so they are treated with a lot of respect and give substantive responsibilities. Excellent team to work with, everyone is friendly and respectful. Excellent training and growth opportunities. Diversity and Inclusion initiatives are at the forefront of the firm, at both worldwide and practice group levels.

    Cons

Very poor work-life balance. 24/7 on-call nature. Expected to be reached anytime, even on vacation, weekends, or holidays. Substantial late-night and weekend work.

    Horrible Horrible Place to work

    Pros

Very competitive pay. Benefits are standard

    Cons

A true sweatshop. There is no work life balance. You can't count on management to support you. If it can save their skin, they will sacrifice you. Truly horrible place to work. Stay away!

    Pros

Interesting work, great network and culture. People and clients are international and wall street journal front page deals.

    Cons

High stress and high hours. The deals are big profile but it comes at the cost of high standards and high hours- the work life balance is not there.
