I have been working at Shedd Aquarium full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

You get to see animals everyday. Great people at most levels.

    Cons

One major downside is the CEO. She lacks industry experience and authenticity. She's hired people who are not knowledgeable. She is not a good leader because she is missing key ingredients needed to be a good leader. Maybe a few years of experience at a smaller organization will help. Morale is at an all time low. The environment is phony, rigid and chaotic. It's a different organization and not in a good way. Shedd once had smart, knowledgeable leaders who cared. The current environment is not good for the people, animals or guests.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium full-time

    Pros

*Great mission *Fun environment *Kind co-workers *Parking for employees on campus

    Cons

*Lack of effective leadership/mentoring *Extremely low pay *Long hour *Meetings-heavy schedules *VERY old school culture *Unhappy employees

    Advice to Management

The old-school culture is turning off younger professionals. Stop stressing the corporate hierarchy so much, stop having so many meetings -- and start giving people the freedom to do their jobs well.

I worked at Shedd Aquarium full-time

    Pros

Shedd has an amazing mission and does amazing work in the world. They effectively educate the masses about aquatic life, conservation, and why aquariums like Shedd need to to exist. I felt great to be even a small part of this... however, low pay and dicey leadership ultimately made it a toxic work environment.

    Cons

As mentioned, it was relatively low pay for the industry. At a coordinator level, I made a good 10-20% below market value for other nonprofit museums/aquariums in major cities. For most of us on the team, it took months to negotiate a raise when the time came, and even then it was still below what other team members doing equivalent work (with equivalent experience... but different genders) were getting paid. Plus, when we were told that no departments/teams received year-end bonuses, you could see that all top level management received bonuses that were near my entire year's salary. Though, it is not all about the money... leadership on my team got increasingly erratic, with top team members being fired and others leaving in droves. There is high turnover at the low to mid level roles across the board and it is usually because they are overworked, underpaid, and frustrated with higher leadership. It is such a shame because the mission and work of the organization is so wonderful!

    Advice to Management

Create more meaningful positions/roles that attract and retain high quality employees. Make sure each team is supported when turnover occurs, rather than allowing for tasks to pile up on others without hiring replacements/restructuring. Give less substantial bonuses to execs and give fair market value salaries to "lower" level employees that do most of the heavy lifting.
