    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Shelby County Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable employment during rough economic times

    Cons

Makes you complacent, you can forget valuable skills, ability, and knowledge useful to the private sector if ever looking for a non-public job. Hard for the private sector to understand how government functionality can relate to their job offers. Low pay and too much politics.

    Advice to Management

Management should take more responsibility for the department(s) and stop making job issues the employee problem. Disagreements among the hierarchy often become an unpleasant issue for the employees. Promotions are often bequeathed to an internal employee and not based on experience according to how they favor one employee over the other. Going forward there should be no favoritism in choosing a current employee for a position.

    Pros

Pretty good entry level job. Teenagers or young adults should apply and stay only for experience in fields of interest.

    Cons

Staff are micromanaged and there is no room for advancement. Horrible health insurance benefits that are very costly. Agency has too many people at the top.

I have been working at Shelby County Government full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The health/dental/vision benefits are amazing. All holidays are paid and accumulation of annual and sick time is calculated on a monthly basis. Any type of governmental employment is surely a healthy resume-booster.

    Cons

There are several people who have been employed for numerous years and are stuck in their ways. There is not a lot of room for advancement because more tenured employees tend to stick around and not allow younger individuals to progress. The basis upon whether you get a job or not is based heavily on who exactly you know in the company and not so much upon ability or education. Many of the processes are antiquated and need to be updated.

    Advice to Management

Establish better ways to communicate and relate to your employees. Listen to the qualms and concerns brought to the table and actually act on creating a solution. Promote more individuals who are within the company who have shown and proven themselves to be assets to their respective departments or the morale will decrease exponentially.

    Pros

Adherence to the set work day hours. Rarely expected to work over-time. Paid holidays and time off improved over time.

    Cons

Not much opportunity for advancement. Always examples of deference to hiring new employees who had political and/or personal connections. Appears that by the time any job opening was announced, in reality, there had already been someone selected to be hired.

    Advice to Management

Demonstrate loyalty to individuals who have worked and done a good job for years when something occurs to change their job position or job status. Attempt to place them elsewhere within the county system.
