I have been working at Shelby County Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stable employment during rough economic times

    Cons

Makes you complacent, you can forget valuable skills, ability, and knowledge useful to the private sector if ever looking for a non-public job. Hard for the private sector to understand how government functionality can relate to their job offers. Low pay and too much politics.

    Advice to Management

Management should take more responsibility for the department(s) and stop making job issues the employee problem. Disagreements among the hierarchy often become an unpleasant issue for the employees. Promotions are often bequeathed to an internal employee and not based on experience according to how they favor one employee over the other. Going forward there should be no favoritism in choosing a current employee for a position.

    Pros

The starting pay is good after 6 months you get a pay increase

    Cons

you and everything in your life takes a backseat tot this job. It is seniority based they throw you on the shift no weekends off you have to work there for 4 years plus before you can get on a shift of your preference THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU you are only good for 8 hours and if they can get 16 out of you they will. This is a horrible job with decent pay and benefits

I worked at Shelby County Government full-time

    Pros

You can manage your schedule with a variety of work shifts. Works well because of children and grandchildren.

    Cons

Systematically cheated out of leave and bonus time, while management, personnel department and in-house legal counsel do nothing.

    Advice to Management

The General Sessions Judges should STOP bragging about your raises and benefits and give the workers the benefits that they are legally entitled to receive and stop threatening the workers whenever they disagree with you about their entitlement to benefits with termination language.

I have been working at Shelby County Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The annual and sick benefits are good. There are built in paid holidays. Most of the time, there is a steady schedule. The majority of the staff here are great, hard working people.

    Cons

It's EXTREMELY political here. It's very much about being in the in crowd and/or being liked by the right people is the only thing getting you promoted. There is very little room for growth and advancement. My position does not have overtime; it is strictly comp time.

    Advice to Management

Dare to learn what your staff actually does! They are not here to just to jump through hoops and meet a numerical standard of "excellence". You will not appreciate them as they deserve and respect the work they do until you learn even the basics of their jobs.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Shelby County Government full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only pros are the benefits and the job experience. The benefits work really well with those looking for a long term employment in a depressing environment. If you have hopes of advancing your career in criminal justice or the legal field then it is good experience starting out.

    Cons

Lack of training, lack of leadership, lack of professionalism, lack of training, lack of common sense and lack of consistency.

    Advice to Management

Become more involved, hold lead staff accountable, observe training provided by lead staff for effectiveness, hold meetings with all staff to ensure understanding and cohesiveness. There are a too many Indians and not enough Chiefs. There is no clear directive. Everyone has their own rules depending on who you are working with on any given day. There needs to be a concise outline of logistics.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Most of the people are great!

    Cons

Clocking in & out for a professional position, time off needs restructuring, appraiser training should reflect international as well as state appraisers to deal with BOE

    Advice to Management

    Request monthly suggestions from employees.
A suggestion box! Think outside the box! Make the place more exciting & desirable! Bring back the old fun days I heard about.

I worked at Shelby County Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pretty good entry level job. Teenagers or young adults should apply and stay only for experience in fields of interest.

    Cons

Staff are micromanaged and there is no room for advancement. Horrible health insurance benefits that are very costly. Agency has too many people at the top.
