I worked at Shell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Challenging work.
    Talented co-workers.
    Very good pay and benefits.

    Cons

    Bureaucratic.
    Slow decision-making.
IT staff outside of the UK, Netherlands, US and India are not as essential, limited opportunity to progress to senior (and global) roles.

    Advice to Management

The big push to offshore IM and IT roles to India over the past two years will come at a cost that will exceed your efforts to reduce OPEX spending post the BG acquisition. You have pushed loyal, dedicated staff with 15-20+ years of Shell experience to your competition, where we will now devote our efforts to making their ROACE best in class. Your decision seems short-sighted, but I guess time will tell.
Nevertheless, I built a very strong career with Shell and have no regrets... too bad your HR policy precludes me from returning as staff... perhaps as a contractor some day.

I worked at Shell (More than 5 years)

    Pros

5 Weeks of vacation right off the bat (3 weeks +12 personal days). Flexibility on working from home depending on job. Good maternity leave. This is for Canada. US has far less vacation time.

    Cons

benefits have reduced in recent years because of downturn in oil and gas

    Advice to Management

Loved my vacation time! be more like the Europeans!

I worked at Shell full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and pension program. Very competitive salary. Training programmes were supported by management and the company provided many opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Bureaucracy slowed down many projects resulting in escalated costs and delayed delivery. Frequent reorganizations resulted in shuffling of middle-management. The encouragement of short term broadening assignments created a revolving door of leadership who wasn't around long enough to make meaningful sustainable positive change.

I worked at Shell (More than a year)

    Pros

    - competitive pay
    -world class name
    -valuable work
    -top notch training

    Cons

    -big company bureaucracy
-a powerful but slow moving monolithic company

    Advice to Management

Expand the scope of subordinates. Each individuals responsibilities are quite narrow. This reduces the overall effectiveness of each employee and creates stagnation. That is all though. I feel this is an excellent company and would be happy to work for them again in the future.
