I worked at Shelter Group full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

best job I had in years. but it needs work. yearly bonus is nice but the tax man gets 40% of it. hours and benefits are decent. nights and weekends off. lots of paid holidays. paid leave, time off. residents were great to work with. most of the employees were nice. not too much overtime.

    Cons

low pay. yearly raise is about .35 cents/hour. vision and dental plans not so great. they just sold over 40 properties (affordable housing portfolio) to another company. short staffed all the time. too much work, to little time or help to get the work done. this creates lots of stress and burnout. biweekly pay sucks. outdated equipment like walkie talkies. tight budgets, everything is about the bottom line. saving money. They keep the building hallways HOT in the summer, AC set to 78 or higher to save money. hallways are too hot. Saving money is more important than the residents comfort.

I have been working at Shelter Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent benefits, free parking in building.

    Cons

Management lacks knowledge about what is really going on within the company or simply doesn't care. Lack of respect for lower level staff members, very egotistical managers. High turnover rate. Internal rumors.

    Advice to Management

Get off your high horse and treat your staff with respect, maybe the turnover rate wouldn't be so high.

I worked at Shelter Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Home office is a small company - if that is what you are looking for. Decent pay.

    Cons

Small company, good pay. Most of the managers that have been there long term would never make it at another company. They’re behavior has been allowed to become unprofessional over time, there is a lot of gossiping, rumors and daily drama. The company and the communities have significant turnover and retention issues and hiring practices are a mess. Nothing wrong with taking a job for the money, but keep the resume updated and continue to look for better options.

I worked at Shelter Group (More than a year)

    Pros

Assisted living and senior healthcare are certainly services that will remain in demand. There is an opportunity to learn what all goes into different aspects of this business. There are also some genuine good people that work there.

    Cons

The "Teamwork" component of their STARS core value is misleading. A team, by definition, is a group of people that work together towards a similar goals. At Shelter, nobody works together; instead it's management firing off orders to their staff for what they need to get done. It's also a "Good Ol' Boys" network. Just because they have a woman serving as the face of leadership of the company doesn't mean they are progressive in women's / minorities' rights.

    Advice to Management

Learn to work as a team member. Learn to work alongside your peers and those that support you. You earn more respect that way. A title means nothing if you do not respect other job functions.

    Pros

Great benefits, desirable downtown location, convenient to metro if you live along the route.

    Cons

The executive management's expectations are domineering and tyrannical, intimidated by subordinates that are confident and assertive. You can only play by their rules.

    Advice to Management

Stop intimidating the staff when you want to show that you are in control. Just because you are in a position of management does not mean you are superior to others.
