I worked at Shepherd University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy job, ability to meet many people, ability to do homework and projects while working. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Keeping of the keys, some other employees would accidentally take keys with them and leave me unable to lock or unlock the building and various rooms.

    Advice to Management

    More keys!

    Pros

    Friendly people to work with

    Cons

Morale is very bad. Lots of people jumping ship and not being replaced, so remaining people have increased workload. Adjuncts would love to help out and take more work, but the University limits all adjuncts to 3/4 time at a dismal rate of pay.

    Cons

very low pay, no benefits at all.

I have been working at Shepherd University full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the pros that come along with working at Shepherd is the Shepherdstown community.

    Cons

The downside to working at Shepherd Iniversity is that there are too many people who say they want change but aren't open to change when it's presented. Shepherd is more of a stepping stone than a place to settle down for a career.

I worked at Shepherd University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice part of the country, some brilliant colleagues, nice hours and okay benefits. Long winter breaks, really only work 8 months a year.

    Cons

Arrogant bullying management...antiquated student center, lots of politics, meetings on top of meetings, micromanagement, pitiful salary, minimal raises, very little emphasis on teaching, this university is more interested in research, which isn't a bad thing, but it is when the professors can't teach. Limited parking, must pay for parking, difficult to be reimbursed for anything, does not pay for the education of faculty that they require.

    Advice to Management

Treat people the way you wish to be treated. Some of you are truly hateful.

I worked at Shepherd University part-time

    Pros

The job is easy as pie, can be daunting, though. There are a lot of opportunities to complete homework.

    Cons

Shepherd University sucks as a whole. They underpay staff and promote people purely on who they know, not by qualifications.

    Advice to Management

Management with your boss is perfectly fine, it's the university as a whole that needs a complete make over.

I have been working at Shepherd University full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Friendly work environment that allows you to balance your work life and personal time. Close to DC and many other metro areas.

    Cons

Extremely below average pay for the area and what is asked of employees. If you do a good job, they will simply look the other way or give you more responsibility for the same salary. The WV public education system is failing and funding is dwindling.

    Advice to Management

Look to take better care of your long term employees. When people commit to making the University better, a blind eye can not turned.

I have been working at Shepherd University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Students are friendly and hard-working. Faculty and staff members are pleasant and dedicated to their jobs. Surrounding scenery is gorgeous.

    Cons

The pay is not commensurate with the school's location. We're in West Virginia, but we're also next door to Maryland. Everybody needs to be paid at least 20% more than what we're getting.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to raise salaries across the board, in order to both entice people to come here and keep them here.

  9. "Tutor"

    Pros

easy to do, and pays well

    Cons

    not all students use it

I have been working at Shepherd University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice benefits package, ample parking for employees, not a lot of traffic for a college town, polite students.

    Cons

Horrible supervisors, embarrassing pay, very petty rivalry between departments, out of date technology, complicated academic procedures, depressing and dull lifestyle for students.

    Advice to Management

Look internally for the causes of your major deficit. Shepherd needs major improvements in campus living, extra curricular activities, technology, social activities, and numerous other things. Students nor faculty want to be at a place this behind in the times and with such a negative atmosphere.
