I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The best part about this job is seeing the patients benefit from 1:1 conversations from employees who actually care. Coworkers (at the time, most of them left because of change in management and horrible conditions) were also amazing. But that is really it. The CEO was fine but we never saw him, so it was hard to make an assessment. Benefits were pretty good but it isn't worth it for the pay. They make the HR representative...

    Cons

Management is very unprofessional. Seeing the patients be in a "crisis" and not get the therapeutic help they needed was very upsetting. This hospital lets people who are NOT trained to run groups are responsible for helping patients. While some people had their bachelors degrees, a lot of the time the bachelor degree was in a completely unrelated field. I just do not understand how they can let people with only a high...

I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System full-time

    Pros

This is a great place to work overall, and you get great psychiatric care experience. The MHW role is a good stepping stone if you are looking to advance your career in the field. I love being a direct part of each patient's care and gaining a new experience with each person. I love the unit I work on and the staff I work with. The staff are professional and very knowledgeable about their patients. I hope to have...

    Cons

The MHW doesn't allow for too much growth, unless you become lead MHW. While it is a great position, the hospital has changed its staffing policies which greatly affect morale in the MHWs. You may be hired for a specific unit and trained there, but when there are staffing needs in other parts of the hospital, you have to go there a lot, without proper training. The pay is low and there is a high mandation...

    Advice to Management

The staffing department is notorious for taking advantage of the mental health workers and they aren't the most pleasant people to deal with. My advice to management, improve pay, boost morale, and make room for growth for MHWs to get good workers to stay longer and weed out the people only there for a paycheck. I think if they reward good, hard workers, they won't constantly be short staffed or have to mandate people.

    Pros

Experience working with mentally ill patients Looks great on resume Coworkers work as team on my unit Rewarding feeling of helping people

    Cons

Low pay with bachelors degree Working with several coworkers who have low education and don't know what they are doing. Staffing issues that causes mandation *Mandation -forcing you to work another 8 hours because staff is needed on the next shift. I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Love the patients, love my coworkers, love getting up and going to work every day -- very challenging and rewarding place to work, and for an entry level position just out of college, it was perfect for me. Now that I am returning to school to become a medical doctor, however, the hours are not manageable with my school schedule and supervisors are reluctant to work out a fixed schedule for school.

    Cons

Hospital is perpetually understaffed; people come and go very quickly (high turnover rate among staff); frequent mandation, so I end up working 60+ hours per week when I was hired for 40; also, the pay feels too low for the amount of work we do...we are part of nursing staff and so are in constant contact with patients, providing support and mediation, crisis intervention and...

    Advice to Management

Please treat nursing staff with the same care and consideration extended to patients. If we are unable to take care of ourselves, mentally and physically, we cannot properly look after the patients. The high turnover rate is due to burn out; employees frequently report feeling exhausted, depressed, anxious and run down. Something needs to change.

I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working for one of the most prestigious independent mental health hospitals in the country. Great at hiring new grads, but more of a con than a pro due to high turnover.

    Cons

Poor staffing, frequent use of mandation to solve staffing issues that are known well in advance. No float pool. Some staff are allowed to show up late, sometimes by hours, so when it's time to go home you're stuck waiting for your replacement to show up. It's already hard work - dealing with acutely mentally ill patients - but top it off with poor management (lackey yes men,...
