I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The best part about this job is seeing the patients benefit from 1:1 conversations from employees who actually care. Coworkers (at the time, most of them left because of change in management and horrible conditions) were also amazing. But that is really it. The CEO was fine but we never saw him, so it was hard to make an assessment. Benefits were pretty good but it isn't worth it for the pay. They make the HR representative...

    Cons

Management is very unprofessional. Seeing the patients be in a "crisis" and not get the therapeutic help they needed was very upsetting. This hospital lets people who are NOT trained to run groups are responsible for helping patients. While some people had their bachelors degrees, a lot of the time the bachelor degree was in a completely unrelated field. I just do not understand how they can let people with only a high...

    Advice to Management

Do better. Care about people and their lives. Incorporate learning opportunities for people who want to learn how to actually help these children.

I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Being able to make a positive impact with patients

    Cons

Unfair, bullying and very disrespectful management with upper management and HR doing nothing about it (my manager has yelled at me over the most simple suggestions or benign requests). Only fair pay with no room for advancement. It is at times a very dangerous work environment. Rotating shifts with no control over your schedule--flexible 12 hour shifts are not offered. Mandating...

    Advice to Management

Survey and really listen to your front-line staff (RN's, MHW's, Unit Clerks and S.W.'s). Eliminate ineffective middle management who are ruining this hospital. Increase pay and hire more milieu managers. Allow self scheduling on all the units with the option for 12 hour shifts.

    Pros

Helping patients to excel and progress in their daily life. Assisting patients to function in a healthy safe environment .

    Cons

Upper management continue to be dishonest, unprofessional, inappropriate and manipulates employees on a daily basis that make your work environment extremely uncomfortable

    Advice to Management

Review Upper management and why different departments and programs are having such a high turn over with employees and staff on the unit. Pay attention to all exit interviews.

I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The direct supervisors and direct care staff are the glue to this whole operation. Creating great friendships with them is extremely easy. The teachers are always willing to lend a helpful hand if they are available.

    Cons

Hard to trust any upper management. There is a sense of "ratting out" that all staff must adhere to for "teaching moments" or consequences are given. Always have to watch your back if you want to keep your job. Very dangerous atmosphere due to all of the restrictions staff have. The residents have the power over the place and they know it.

    Advice to Management

I understand change can be good. But if things were working and you changed it so they don't work.... Don't be afraid to admit it and change it again. Don't try to push through it and hurt the staff that actually deal with the residents all day every day.

I have been working at Sheppard Pratt Health System

    Pros

The only pros I can think of are the relationships you form with your coworkers and only the coworkers you work side by side with because everyone else you can't trust.

    Cons

Upper management! They don't give a damn about their employees they would rather work a person to the point where they are completely stressed out and barely able to function then try and help them. The sad thing is, is that they are a mental health facility, you would think they would put put there staffs well being above the bottom line. At the Jefferson School the only...

    Advice to Management

Learn to value your employees before they become your down fall. Learn to appreciate the things people try to do before you rip them to shreds. You are supposed to be the leaders and when you rip people down and make them feel like nothing remember that they are the same ones who are leading the children there and who are supposed to be teaching them to have self worth. You can't teach someone something that your...

    Pros

    Direct Supervisors are laid back

    Cons

Dangerous work enviroment, I was physically assaulted more than 10 times in a year Work can be very stressful at times Upper management sees employees as replaceable commodities Very poor wages for what you have to put up with

    Advice to Management

Value your direct care employees and pay them a live-able wage. This is a job where experience, culture, and relationships matter.
