I worked at ShermansTravel Media as an intern

    Pros

Interacting with big name clients, being pretty independent in your projects, they trust you with a lot as an intern. There is a lot to learn here. Paid internship which is always a plus.

    Cons

Pretty quiet office, sometimes you have a lot of downtime because supervisors are in meetings etc.

I have been working at ShermansTravel Media full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Good vacation policy
    - Decent benefits
    - Excellent support team

    Cons

    Pros – (1) Generous time-off / vacation package

    1. Ineffective "leadership" unless you like to be micromanaged, demoralized, and demotivated (no real leaders but a manager and a few who like to "boss")
    2. Forget about an accurate appraisal of your work -- no kudos for jobs well done but plenty of criticism for the slightest misstep
    3. Too many , unproductive meetings
    4. No effective and productive systems in place
    5. Not given any direction or insight into strategy or vision; plan, goals, objectives
    6. Fuzzy answers given when good questions asked about the plan for improving the products

    Pros

Great experience, everyone is valued and treated fairly. The benefits that are offered are great, especially the three week time off.

    Cons

    The turn over is high

    Advice to Management

More recognition of hard working employees.

    Pros

    - the people who have been there a long time are the stars, they are talented, intelligent, and pleasant to be around; they are the ones who keep the company afloat
    - good place to get your kick start and get some experience in an office environment
    - management makes attempts to get staff together

    Cons

    - poor hiring decisions that force current employees to work side by side with new people who don't show potential or investment in the company
    - low morale
    - high turnover
    - micromanagement of senior management, so they can't do their job and lead the company in the right direction

    Pros

    (1) Generous time-off / vacation package

    Cons

    (1) Terrible management / leadership
    (2) No performance reviews
    (3) No praise for jobs well done
    (4) Micro-management by definition
    (5) Too many meetings for a small company
    (6) No direction or strategy or vision or plan or goals or objectives

    Advice to Management

Leadership needs to be spread out across more than just the CEO. Give other division managers the ability to do their jobs without second-guessing every decision, holding a plethora of meetings just to hear yourself talk, and micro-managing each step of the daily job. Listen to your employees. Seek input. Show empathy. Treat employees as the assets they are and not a necessary by-product of owning a business.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at ShermansTravel Media full-time

    Pros

Most of the people are nice

    Cons

A very tight workplace. Everyone is pushed together and sharing desks. Also there is a negative vibe in the office where workloads are constantly shifted around and there is little recognition for jobs well done and only negative criticism.

    Advice to Management

Consider making the office more lively, get more space and reward good work.

    Pros

People really like travel. Great editorial department that really cares about quality.

    Cons

No overall leadership in company. Short sighted planning leading to layoffs. (I heard the CEO still had a corp personal travel budget even after the company had layoffs.)
