I have been working at Shire full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Really good benefits (especially 401K, generous vacation/sick time, annual bonus)
Smart people who (in my realm anyway) want to work together and do their best
Rare disease drugs that help kids; fresh return to patient focus
Lexington as a "Launch Center of Excellence" for new drugs
A strong work/home balance understanding throughout my group
Freedom to manage your own workload (within deadlines).
High expectations; good challenge; strong support when you seek it out

    Cons

Lots of change in past few years. Back around 2016 many inexpensive but nice perks started getting removed. People felt less valued. Some left. Pressure increased on those who did not leave, due to under-staffing and fresh hires. Rinse and repeat. This is being mitigated now by our upper management, expressly and noticeably and pressure is easing again. But we got dinged hard there for a while.

    Advice to Management

First off, wow -- there are some terrible recent reviews here -- if I were applying to work at Shire now based on these reviews, I would be nervous. And yet my own work experience has been very comfortable and interesting and and enjoyable. My advice to applicants: look at the location and the dates of these reviews. My own realm is Lexington/Alewife Manufacturing and my experience is much different from that of someone in Sales or someone whose site closed after the Baxalta merger. When you interview, ask about the group and make sure things are healthy there. To management: it is obvious that you are recognizing some of the mistakes of the past year or two -- suddenly we are getting some of our kinder/gentler policies back again and feeling like employee recognition and retention matter again; keep that up or people will flee. I like Shire. We do good work. I'm happy to stay here. The people I work with are great. Just keep treating us right (again), show that we're valued, and we're all good!

    Pros

    Fantastic team and direct bosses.

    Cons

Non-existent culture, non-transparency with the ongoing Takeda takeover.

I have been working at Shire full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pays at the top of the industry for performance

    Cons

Zero culture, higlhy siloed organization, very little innovation. Marketing is non-existent at this company and there is zero cross-functional collaboration vs other industry leaders.

    Advice to Management

Not much hope here with Takeda (an even bigger and more bueracratic) takeover

I worked at Shire full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Everyone was understanding and flexible when it came to work/life balance. Pay was great

    Cons

Too big to get out of its own way. Everything is in constant disarray. The Baxalta acquisition turned Shire upside down. Every day it seemed like we were pulled in a different direction and told "this is what we're doing now". Most if not all of my work that I completed was never for any purpose. I got a pat on the back and then it was forgotten about. I feel as though I wasted so much of my time there doing work that was never going to be used again. Think of it as moving a pile of sand from one side of the beach to the other side for no reason

    Advice to Management

Focus on some simple and attainable goals instead of trying to boil the ocean. You guys really need to pay attention because the word out in the public is that Shire is a place you should stay away from. Too bad because it was awesome pre-Baxalta era. Now with the Takeda takeover, who knows what will happen

I have been working at Shire full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good base, autonomy, great sales people, excellent direct manager

    Cons

Constantly changing incentives; goals are revealed halfway through the quarter; upper management says all the right words but it is clear that CEO doesn’t really care about anything but priming this company to be sold. The patients should always come first, and I haven’t seen/heard upper management set that example. It’s all about unrealistic quarterly sales goals that are pulled out of thin air with no regard for trending or market dynamics.

    Advice to Management

Read an intro to sales leadership book and maybe act like leaders with integrity. To the CEO: let the people under you make some of their own decisions. You’ve destroyed the culture of this company.
