I have been working at Shire full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good team spirit and management, at least in my current orbit in Process Development. Good culture; profitable company with interesting and challenging work. Good compensation and benefits. My department management is good and supportive, and we work as one team. Resource planning is actively managed.

    Cons

Currently re-organizing internally. Just had major layoff (in Vienna sections) and future events not known. So don't be surprised if departmental re-orgs happen.

I have been working at Shire full-time

    Pros

Its getting harder everyday to come up with pros for working at Shire.

    Cons

Senior leadership seems to be out of touch. Compensation appears to be going down. The purchase of Baxalta has been negative for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Stop sending out tone deaf emails about your fantastic vacation to the canary islands while you are continually reorganizing/laying people off. Dont play games with people's compensation

I have been working at Shire full-time

    Pros

My first industry role and despite all the issues I have been learning quite a bit. There is some flexibility with coming into the office, but that because they've made so many illogical moves they have to be flexible...they can't afford to lose more people (too many have left as it is).

    Cons

Too much moving around...I've had to move 4 times in a year for this company, and they don't care. It's a huge waste of money and as resulted in numerous other budget cuts...very silly and inefficient.

I have been working at Shire full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Really smart people working hard on valuable products, great pipeline and teams

    Cons

executive leadership is tone deaf, CEO blogs offer advice on taking breaks, summer vacations etc but then refers to the Canary Islands and boring books that are NOT summer reads (please, who would actually read those in real life?)

Employee engagement survey pointed out flaws at the top but message to company (er, enterprise - apparently we have all joined Star Trek) was we all need to fix it, not them - management doesn't hear employees

    Advice to Management

ENOUGH with the plan to move to Cambridge, 50%+ staff departures expected if move is forced, we love working in the burbs to avoid the city traffic for a reason!! Not driving in that hellish traffic and fighting for parking everyday to be at Shire!

    I worked at Shire full-time

    Pros

Work that helps patients in need is inspiring.
There are great people all throughout the company and many teams feel like small families.
If the environment is a good fit for you, you can get a lot of opportunities fast.

    Cons

The strategic direction feels like it is constantly changing, and people cannot follow or understand the CEO's direction.
The company is very, very heavily focused on cost management in order to pay down debt.
You burn out quickly and have to deal with major changes all the time.

    Advice to Management

Stop frantically changing directions. Stick with a direction that will make the company successful, and develop a positive and winning culture. You can only succeed if your employees believe in you and your direction, and work to make it successful.

I have been working at Shire full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Quiet, relatively stable work environment.

    Cons

The split off from Baxter and acquisition by Shire have, understandably, caused many changes and disruptions over the past two years. The "glory days" of Westlake Village being the center of the universe are long gone!

    Advice to Management

Retention, retention, retention. What's the plan?

I have been working at Shire full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The industry is dynamic which requires Shire to be dynamic. The pace can be fast, but when you feel aligned with the work you are doing, that's fine. My colleagues are incredibly smart and I can say I learn and improve every day.

    Cons

The company is working to redefine itself. It went from 5,000 employees to over 20,000 in one acquisition. The cultures were very different and that was not fully recognized. Shire has to become a new company, but not everyone wants to change. It will take some time to get through it, but if you are comfortable working through those growing pains, it will be fine.
