I worked at Shoppers Drug Mart full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Always busy with an ever changing retail requirement for change in IT. SDM was always exploring new ideas for how it's customers could shop and this kept the IT departments always busy

    Cons

Always busy is a good but the demand at that time for me was overloading. I had a long commute to and from the office which for me added to he expectation on the daily work load required.

I have been working at Shoppers Drug Mart (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - nicest employees you'll ever meet
    - no sense of hierarchy
    - management was very welcoming
    - thorough training; they made sure I was very comfortable with my responsibilities
    - positive and fun working environment

    Cons

    - standing for long periods of time
    - can sometimes be stressful due to the unpredictable nature of the job; dealing with different customers, some days are crazy busy, others are not, etc.

    Advice to Management

There should be more information about "head office" and I wish there were more opportunities to move up to an entry level position in corporate, or even internship opportunities!

I have been working at Shoppers Drug Mart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are awesome- available to part time and full time. Great people! I have been recently learning that there are lots of opportunities for people wanting to further there career in Shoppers.

    Cons

Feel like you may be punished for calling in sick or going on holidays. Don't have access to the RRSP program until you are management

    Advice to Management

Make programs for advancement more available so people will stick around.

    Pros

Lots of perks - demo sale at head office. Sample goodie bags to support charities

    Cons

Different levels of management - so decision making is not fast phased.

    Pros

Worked at shoppers for 7 years between being a student in high school and university, and after graduating. Made it to assistant manager position. Honestly speaking the only 2 true positions that you can make a career of a retail level employee are the front store manager, and the owner/associate pharmacist. If you are a good cosmetic manager, your salary and commission will equal a rewarding career as well. Anyone else (assistant, merchandiser, supervisor, cashier, photo lab tech) this is a job and do not expect much.
    Discount- 30%
    Experience
Meeting new people everyday as well as friendly regulars

    Cons

-Front store managers are often lazy (not all)
-ALL shoppers screw employees in wages. Don't matter what province you live in. All are CHEAP
    - not unionized
    - head office is a joke
    - development program is a joke
-benefits aren't the worst but they aren't reflective of a industry leader like shoppers

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees properly. You got guys busting their humps making next to minimum. Shoppers is a multimillion dollar company. No one should be making $12 and under here...
And fix LEAD foundations development program. It does nothing for anyone

    Pros

    - friendly co-workers
    - gifts at Christmas
    - potential to learn all jobs in the store
    - accommodating work hours
    - 30% discount

    Cons

    - rude and demeaning manager
    - staff are completely over looked by the associate owner
    - minimum wage
    - not many opportunities for staff under 17
    - some workplace safety violations
    - high turnover rate

    Advice to Management

Associate owners should acknowledge staff and even try to know who everyone is. Managers should not yell at staff and talk down to them. Staff who take an interest in other positions should not be denied training.

I have been working at Shoppers Drug Mart part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-30% discount is always a plus.

-flexible schedule even for full timers if there's adequate notice to take time off
    (My location Atleast)

-Constantly promoting "Blue" (good) culture in store

-trainings for cosmetic products and the amazing Gratis we receive ( BB Expert )

-can work different stores to get more hours

    Cons

-Main issue is the Head Office not recognizing the differences between good stores and bad ones. I understand there is a new DM in my district, but before they put out ALL the same rules, please remember your stores are all different. I understand they're all under the SDM/loblaw family but don't forget that we work in those stores all day and that makes us knowledgable on what works and doesn't. So please before you implement things, remember a store is its own living and breathing entity. Perhaps taking time to sit down with different employees and see how it works. The suits and all the façade of superiority doesn't matter to us. We need to know you care, Pretend if you have to.

-Also, "customer is always right" doesn't work in this environment. Take care of your workers first and your workers will take care of your customers.

-And please stop harbouring multiple Part-time employees just to avoid giving your workers Full-time status. That's greedy and unfair to some of them who has worked years in your stores.

-fix your policies for Returns. That's 99.9% of the reason we get in arguement with customers. Lay out a proper guideline

    Advice to Management

-Stop being so cheap, your workers works very hard, learn to reward them.
